"Yes, sir," Ranma said. "My mother wanted me to use it."
"Any idea why?" Sisko asked.
"She wanted me remember where I came from," Ranma said uncomfortably. "I kept it to remind her. I don't see what this has to do with anything."
"I was just curious," Sisko said. "My tailor has the same name and it piqued my curiousity."
Ranma blinked in blank confusion at the comment.
"Tailor, sir?" Ranma asked.
"I've studied your starfleet record," Sisko said. "You received high marks in combat, tactics and languages. Contrary to that, your marks in psychology, history, culture and the like were barely enough to get you into the diplomatic corps."
"It was hard work, sir," Ranma admitted.
"You also have a record of several...disturbances," Sisko said.
"I never started any of those fights," Ranma said defensively.
"Regardless," Sisko said. "For someone of your proclivities, it seems odd that you would try for the diplomatic corps rather than security."
Ranma remained silent for a long period of time at that, looking uncertain.
"So, why did you apply for the diplomatic corps rather than another assignment?" Sisko asked.
"Because, diplomatic corps practically insured I'd come here," Ranma said.
"I'd imagine that you'd want to stay as far away from Cardassia and Bajor as possible," Sisko said, looking at her file. "You don't seem to get along with either species."
"I didn't start those fights," Ranma repeated firmly.
"At this posting, Ensign," the Commander said, folding his hands against each other, "you are likely to more than immature taunts and drunken swings. Can you stay out of fights here, when you couldn't in star fleet?"
"I can do my job, sir," Ranma said. "I haven't been in any fight over the last year, sir."
"You stopped at the point of being threatened with blacklisting," Sisko said. "You show a lot of discipline as soon as you're under the lamp."
"Sir," Ranma said. "If you don't think I'm up to the job, why did you request me personally?" Sisko laughed and clapped his hands.
"You knew about that, did you?" Sisko asked, standing up. "I think you have potential, Ensign Garak, but I want to make sure that you are aware of the threats to you here."
"I know what I'm stepping into," Ranma said.
"I hope you do," Sisko said honestly.
