The change was retconned back several centuries, and it was accomplished quite simply.

Viruses adapted to a wide variety of environments and situations. They even exchanged data with other varieties of themselves. So it occurred in Jusenkyo, after a young girl had drowned in a spring. A girl with a cold. After the body had been pulled from the pool, one of those who had done the pulling got sick. From there it spread.

Those who manifested this variation of the common cold would hack and cough, but it was during the worst part of the disease that they would sneeze and change EVERYTHING.

Because that sneeze would suddenly see the inflicted as shorter, bustier, cute, and decidedly female. If a woman caught the disease, it wasn't a big deal. If a guy caught it, it became rather more of a problem.

At first the disease was more or less contained to China. The Mongols had a number of problems because of the disease, but then some of those resistant to it realized that they had a potent weapon and began deliberately spreading it to places they planned on attacking.

The disease also spread slowly through more peaceful contact such as trade. When it hit the crowded cities of the Mideast, it went through them by storm. Not everyone was hit, nor did all those infected change.

Some faith declared this fate, and that those changed were being punished. Some faiths held that the change was ordained by a god or gods and a punishment against their entire civilization.

With the greater number of women, gender roles altered some. Men still had greater upper body strength on average, were tougher, and still seen as more expendable. Therefore they were often in the front of battles and common soldiers. Women, however, were trained with weapons far more often and were seen as less fragile as the practice spread. There were still an inordinate amount of problems caused by the lack of feminine hygiene products, though vinegar production raised by a considerable amount and proved to have a variety of uses in that regard.

Polygamy became more and more accepted through the centuries in the disease's wake. It was more or less a fact of life, with a First Wife ruling the roost.
