Gatekeepers 1/2: Bending Wind [Episode 38223]

by Kestral

Ranma Saotome LIKED his Gate powers. Oh, he'd make a point about not needing it for a number of things. On the other hand, Anything Goes meant taking any advantage you could get - and if you could get it that made it fair.

Hotaru liked her sempai's Gate powers too.

No, Ranma Saotome did not have some nasty mind-control power that bent the poor girl into being his devoted slave. Not that this was necessarily obvious. Hotaru had been friendless, lacking in a lot of pleasant human contact, lonely and longing for someone whom she could be with.

Seeing a despondent girl who'd been bullied, Ranma had DOOMED himself with five innocent little words.

"Do ya wanna be friends?"

Doomed doomed doomed doomed DOOMED.

From that point, anything Ranma did was viewed in the most positive light by one Hotaru Tomoe. He'd managed to beat Mistress Nine (with the help of AEGIS staff admittedly) and gone on to get her more friends, a place where she was welcome, help with her admittedly frail health, out of the school she'd been in and away from those bullies, introduced her to an entire world she'd been hiding from.

Mind control power? No. Not really necessary was it?

His powers manifested in several different ways though. Wind was subtle and teasing at times, but could hammer away with a force to lay low a city. One of the most interesting (to Ranma) methods of using his Gate Of Wind was the bo-staff he could flick out into a glider. He'd often spend hours in aerial combat training (flying through clouds and around buildings and in imaginary dogfights) and sometimes would take Hotaru along.

Snuggling against him for an hour or two while they soared around the city had merely been Ranma wanting more practice in carrying someone while flying, whereas Hotaru had interpreted it in other manners.

Doomed doomed doomed doomed DOOMED.

There were other things he could do with wind, practically solidifying a ball of air and using it as a projectile - or forming a shield with it. He practiced these a lot as they WERE combat techniques.

He'd also learned Healing Wind, a minor healing/purification technique but it could do things that medical science couldn't.

Which had been where something else had gone terribly wrong.

Many years ago, someone had been investigating 'Anything Goes School Of Indiscriminate Grappling' and come across a sister-school. Ranma had still been learning the Healing Wind and it had taken a lot of effort from him to produce it. With the mother of this family in the final stages of a metastatic cancer that had started in her lungs, permission was arranged for Ranma to practice that technique on her.

Kimiko Tendo's life had been saved by Ranma Saotome. He'd had to use the technique five times because her system had been ravaged by the disease and the therapies involved, but over the course of a week he'd regularly exhausted himself and healed the damage to the mother. Ranma had left, feeling good about using these powers in such a way, and had been ignorant about many things that had been going on at the time.

Had that been the end of it, everything would have been fine. The Tendo daughters were all around his own age, but they hadn't even talked much to him. They'd watched him work, they'd watched the AEGIS people carry him off, they'd watched the medical people examine their mother, all from behind a pane of glass.

What he certainly couldn't have foreseen was:
