And there she was, in her still new-looking school uniform. Ranma glided down right next to her, wondering why she wasn't waving and singing back "Yoohoo, Ranma-Senpai!" as she usually did when he went to get her in the morning.
Tomoe Hotaru looked strangely pensive this fine bright morning...
"Hotaru-chan. Is something wrong?"
"...What? Oh, Ranma-Senpai, no - I, um, just had a dream, that's all..."
"Oh." Ranma considered this, and ran a quick 'diagnosis check' on her, using his Gate-powers. She was getting pretty healthy now, since that thing called Mistress Nine or something like that had been gotten rid off, but ......Hmmmm. Nothing seemed to be especially wrong...
"Was it a bad dream?" Well, Hotaru wasn't looking like it had been a particularly good dream, frankly...
"...Mmmmmmm. Well, um...." Hotaru bit her lip. "Well, it was about - you, actually..."
"...Me?" Ranma blinked. "Oh. I, um, got hurt or something?"
"No. I, um... You - you were a Gatekeeper, and awfully powerful, and a hero, and more kakkoii then anybody, even the idol singers and movie stars, and everybody praised you and said you were wonderful, and I thought so too, but - you - "
"Hmmmm?" Ranma looked at her. "That doesn't sound like a bad dream..."
Hotaru had dreamed of a super-powerful and super-goodlooking version of him, or something like that? ...But why would she be upset about something like that? Even more powerful, with serious good looks - Ranma grinned, thinking about it. That sounded like some serious fun, actually...
"But Ranma-Senpai - you weren't, um..."
Ranma narrowed his eyes. Hotaru actually sounded somewhat seriously upset.
"...You weren't you, Ranma-Senpai..."
..........Errrrrrmm?
Ranma rolled that around in his mind.
Oooh.
"...Heeey. So you like me - the real me - better then the Super-powerful and Super-kakkoii version in your dream, huh?"
"Mmmmmmmm." Hotaru mumbled, getting red in the face. Well, there's been - other things - but -
Ranma smiled, seeing Hotaru start smiling a little bit, though her cheeks were still as red as a beet.
"Well, to school, then? We'll be late if we don't hurry up, you know!"
Hotaru giggled, settling herself into his arms as usual.
"Yooohooo!"
"...Yoohooo!!"
Neither of them had any way of knowing that at just that moment, a grey-haired man with glinting glasses had smiled at their flying images on a screen.
"...Someday, daughter dearest."
The man once known as Tomoe Souichirou whispered to the aether.
"Someday."
