AEGIS and the Gatekeepers had remained secret through to the late 1970s. In 1979, that changed with the disclosure in the Washington Post of the existence of AEGIS and a secret war against the Invaders. A formerly secret base was revealed in the city of Arlington. All fifty-seven personnel of the base were dead three days later in a massive Invader action.
The offices of the Post were next, with only fourteen dead, but the offices looted. AEGIS denied they were behind this action.
Another massive Invader operation occurred across the United States, over the span of two months. At the end of which the death toll had risen to 437,500 approximated.
The result was an odd situation. Individual Gatekeepers were known to the press and even featured in magazines as a sort of celebrity. AEGIS itself kept themselves hidden. People would inevitably find where someone vanished into a stairwell, but not where the high speed turbolift eventually deposited that individual.
In 1987 came Operation Shikishima, wherein the Invaders were themselves invaded. A massive operation that utilized the latest advances in dimensional technology.
Since then, the Invader numbers had dropped drastically. Other menaces had replaced them, most lacking the worldwide scope of the "Redhats".
Naturally, funding started dropping for AEGIS with the exception of two countries. One was Japan, which respected tradition. The other, New Zealand, hadn't spent that much to begin with and so could keep up their contribution without a lot of difficulty.
In Japan, though, some Gatekeepers were quiet and in the background, but some were not. Those who were not tended to be heavily marketed.
Which was why Kimiko Tendo went into her daughter's room and moved past the poster of Pegasus and Saturn standing together against the Horde Of Penguin Zombies (the Winter Of UnDead Discontent had been last year's menace). She moved past the little PVC figurines of the various Gatekeepers, and past the little stack of tapes that contained various TV interviews. She simply set Akane's clothes down, then checked the calendar. It being Tuesday, Akane would be late because of that club she was attending.
Kimiko's smile was bemused. Who could have known that the little boy they'd met all those years ago would have had such an influence on her family?
Akane was a big fan of the Saturn-Pegasus romance (which everyone except the two involved knew about) theory, as opposed to Nabiki's "they just have a close working relationship" theory.
Though at least Akane wasn't doing it as a somewhat ecchi dojinshi the way Kasumi was.
Ranma continued on in his classes until he could break away, then do the whole "community service" thing. Keep an eye out for new dangers, practice his control over his Gate, and try not to get in the way of those other Senshi. He was just coming in on an approach, seeing Hotaru waving from the top of the building where his apartment was located, when the new menace decided to make its presence felt by shooting at the obvious target he was making. With the nice little hole in the glidewing, Ranma got a brief glimpse of this new menace.
Said menace being:
