Ranma's mother called it the Gate Of Manliness.
Ranma's detractors called it the Stupid Gate, the Cutesy Gate, the Seraglio Gate, or PervGate.
Ranma's coworkers called it unfortunate.
Ranma himself called it something that wasn't particularly polite.
Officially it was called the Gate Of Love.
It had several effects. At the most minimal level, it gave him some toughness and extra strength. Various people found him fairly attractive, up until he opened his mouth at least. Some people got past that and found someone who really wanted a friend.
Which caused some amusement to Setsuna Meiou as Ranma had been desperate for a friend who was NOT being influenced by his Gate, which he had some funny ideas about - spread by his mother. However, what Setsuna found most amusing was that someone HAD gotten past his defenses and been wearing something AEGIS had come up with to further shield the wearer from Ranma's 'Aura Of Love'. That Hotaru Tomoe, keeper of the Gate Of Destruction, had been just as desperate for a friend had led to some predictable level of co-dependence.
The amusement fell away as she noted that Hotaru was friendless because her own power was just as "leaky" as Ranma's. People sensed, even if they didn't KNOW, that Hotaru was Death on some level. Animals and people tended to be frightened of her, feeling the doom of her presence when she was just quietly standing in the background.
Oh yes, she could see where someone like Ranma who was immune to her power just as she was to his was something that Hotaru valued very highly.
Ranma's powers were more Life-oriented. When he switched the bracers to his 'battle-level' they were simply turned off. His Gate output was at 0.05% and almost any wound or poison or disease in himself or anyone he was focussing his power on would be healed in short order. People in his immediate vicinity tended to feel happy or upbeat, and couples would have a tendency to get "in the mood" if they had any normal inclination to do so. It had been proven in four independent studies that nobody who didn't tend to be attracted to someone else was affected by the Gate's aura. It had been pointed out that in each case, that nobody was coerced into finding a handy horizontal surface and engaging in sexual olympics. It had been documented that the field merely seemed to stimulate drives that were already present and targets already selected.
Ranma, however, was well acquainted that 'conventional wisdom' and 'common knowledge' were not dependent on facts. All the lawsuits resulting from his brief visit to America was enough reminder.
On the other hand, occasionally couples would come to the country inn his mother ran. It had been duly documented that couples who had fallen under that influence had especially healthy children usually as a result.
A very manly Gate, his mother felt.
Ranma mainly went regularly to that inn because he could visit his mother and because AEGIS had equipped it with an exercise area.
Setsuna was curious. What was so bad about a Gate Of Love that Ranma would practically be in fear of opening it?
She tracked back, to discover that when he had opened it all the way the last time -
