Gatekeepers 1/2: Inner workings [Episode 38724]

by Kestral

Setsuna would have to join the Inners to ensure their survival and put down Jupiter's chance of rebellion.

Otherwise this would get very messy indeed - Neptune and Uranus were actually harsher and more ruthless as a result of their philosphical handling of the death of those four innocents. That and they felt themselves trapped - that they HAD to do things this way and were being punished by others around them. It was them against the world, literally!

Things had gotten worse with That Incident, because it had not just been four people dead.

They'd fought a daimon, changed back, and Haruka had spotted a weird inhuman shape in a park.

Off she'd gone, transformed back to Uranus, jump, give speech, and began by hitting the monster with a World Shaking. The monster had been a real wimp. One hit and it was lying there in a broken heap next to the cameras.

Cameras?

At that point other things began clamoring for attention through Uranus' tired head. The screaming and horrified kids, the screaming and horrified mothers, the screaming and well you know - other monsters.

The cameras filming "Godzilla Junior Teaches Math" episode of "Little Monster School"...

No, it had not been a good day for Haruka Tenou or the mutely staring Sailor Neptune.

One little event and suddenly the world seemed to be against them.

Instead of trying to prove their innocence they'd wallowed in angst and allowed the press to define them as dangerous vigilantes.

Sailor Moon and the other Inners had immediately distanced themselves, explaining to a Gatekeeper and a reporter that they didn't even KNOW these other girls in the sailor suits and that they themselves never ever ever struck before giving a speech and allowing for the monsters to reveal they had zippers or something. Some people believed them.

Sailor Pluto had seen all this and opened a pack of Pepto-Bismol™ pills she kept by the time gate for just such an emergency. Not one of the Inners could be counted on to make a speech that was a rational argument to the press of their noninvolvement. Ami might - except that facing a lot of cameras and microphones would cause anxiety attacks. Minako could be counted on to throw some weird phrases out and garble her rehearsed speech. Usagi might tell them about their future utopia under her rule and look how badly THAT could be misinterpreted. Rei was the most likely, and if she started in on a rant about how untrustworthy and misery-causing men were - the Inners would likely find themselves with some other unflattering labels. Makoto was fairly quiet in this new timeline, probably because her loyalties were divided and she was confused about her own role in all of this.

So the Inners needed her and not just for additional firepower.

The time would come when there would be open warfare between AEGIS and the Senshi, and not merely the suspicious rivalry between them now. Her ability to plan, her firepower, and her other talents were all needed with the Inners. At this point the Outers would likely chase her off if she approached.

Sailor Pluto decided to check one more thing before trying to contact her present day self.
