Sauron, It's former master. Isildur, who claimed It, and perished in an ambush. Smeagol/Gollum, who took It from another master. And then there was the whole Baggins fiasco, from Bilbo to Frodo, and then to Sam Gamgee.
The One Ring tired of Sauron. It knew that by being in another world, It had finally felt the last of It's ex-master's presence. Good riddance, Sauron's constant lust for It was getting unnerving. Not to mention that It was sick of twisting It's masters to Sauron's desires.
Now, in this new world, with a new master, It decided to start a new life.

Ranma studied the ring. Still warm from It's flight through the portal, It seemed to enlarge slightly, so that It was a perfect fit for his finger. Strange markings were etched on It's surface, and they seemed to be some kind of language.
