AN:i don't really consider this dark, no doubt some people will, hence the tag.
Setsuna looked over the displays and found herself going to have a nice sit down.
The future was not what it used to be.
No not at all.
There were new menaces to Crystal Tokyo!
- Two governments (oddly enough it was China and France) who had sat themselves up as opponents of the Crystal Tokyo regime and bitterly fought them in world courts and the like on a regular basis.
- One government which was sometimes opposed to Crystal Tokyo, and sometimes their most vocal supporter, which was the United States.
- Governments who alternately opposed, supported, railed against or praised Crystal Tokyo - mainly depending on the whims of the latest news stories and the spin put on it by their news agencies. This group included Japan, Germany, Russia, and a vast host of others.
- Meteors, runaway spaceships, and other menaces to domed cities.
- Technophobic or otherwise hostile terrorist groups.
- Evil menaces from beyond the stars who wouldn't bother places with an atmosphere due to allergies to oxygen or other handicaps - though these were rarities.
On the other hand there were new benefits to Crystal Tokyo.
- The warships patrolling the Solar System. Most menaces to mankind found themselves dealing with particle accelerators and missile launchers long before they got anywhere near Crystal Tokyo or Earth.
- No Nemesis. There had been no need to purify all mankind of evil or exile those who did not submit to purification and so those villains quietly extinguished their time loop without anyone else noticing.
- The Sides (LaGrange colonies L1 & L5) were being developed by the United States and Russia with the help of Crystal Tokyo - one reason the USA was a frequent backer of Crystal Tokyo - a matriarchal kingdom. The Sides not only provided trade partners for CT, but they were the jump-off point for journeys all through the solar system.
- Lack of the Great Freeze. A far more crowded future. Less perfection to be sure. It was easier to create a utopia with a very small number of people instead of teeming throngs. So the Lunar Kingdom was a beautiful kingdom with strict immigration qualifications and quotas - and a more managable society than those that remained Earthbound.
- More heroes. Not everyone came from the Moon Kingdom and had a Senshi powerup. Not everyone was a superpowered android. There were cyborgs, superspies, martial artists, and others - including ordinary people who managed to do extraordinary things and found themselves being heroes after the fact. A shining example had been given, and some people rose to the challenge.
- Careers. Families. Love. The Senshi had these things now for themselves. Not only had the Sailor Marionettes given them backup and allowed them the luxury of expert impersonators at need, but the result of their interaction with the Marionettes and Ranma had allowed the others to make new contacts and friends as they went along.
Which brought Setsuna Meiou, Sailor Pluto, to observe other things.
Apparently at some point, Crystal Tokyo also became the producer of marionettes. With their Heart Circuits intact, the colorfully dressed defenders of love and justice could be found throughout the solar system.
"Puu?"
Hearing the familiar term, if not expecting the slightly different inflection and tone, Setsuna turned to look at...
...a pair of shapely legs ending in leatherette boots?!
Setsuna's eyes slowly tracked up. Chibi-usa wasn't so chibi. She was a teenager apparently, not quite as mature as the Black Lady. She was also apparently:
