Ranma and Yuka would have found it unimaginable for them to end up happily married to each other a couple of years ago, especially without any coercion or mishaps of any kind motivating the marriage. In fact, Yuka even had her own boyfriend that she was very much in love with, while Ranma was still in the mess of relationships he was trapped in.
Then Yuka's boyfriend died in a car accident. After a period of grief, Yuka began to notice how hard Ranma tried to placate Akane at times with Akane not giving an inch. She tried to talk Akane into being more lenient with Ranma, and at the same time tried to convince Ranma to be nicer to Akane. She had seen the occasional glimpses of feelings they had for each other, and she didn't want them to suffer loss like she had.
Unfortunately, Yuka's relationship with Akane began to sour as Akane began to accuse Yuka of taking Ranma's side and eventually being romantically involved with him behind her back, and Yuka felt increasingly frustrated at how Akane seemed to take things for granted. On the other hand, she was rather surprised at Ranma who often expressed a desire to be on friendlier terms with Akane, but simply didn't know how, contrary to Yuka's expectations of him as just being an insensitive jerk.
On the other hand, Ranma was surprised at a girl actually listening to him. Initially, he had thought of Yuka as nagging him on Akane's behalf, although he had been sensitive enough to be nice about it with the recent loss of Yuka's boyfriend. But his opinion of her steadily changed as she genuinely listened to his problems and tried to help him out with Akane. And he started to think of Yuka as a friend, as she began to worry about his other problems with him and he himself starting to care about Yuka. It helped that Yuka found many of his stories and dreams interesting, and usually not being in a high-pressure situation when he was with Yuka, he found himself interested in hers.
But even as Yuka and Ranma grew friendlier at the same time the friendship between Yuka and Akane chilled, there wasn't even a glimmer of romance between them until the irrevocable breakup between Ranma and Akane:
