Barret nodded, looking over Vash, trying to get a measure of his capability. “That’s the idea.”
“I’m in, as long as no one had to die” stated Vash in an uncharacteristically curt tone.
Barret blinked. “What do you mean by that.”
Vash sighed. “I do not kill. Every life is precious, and no one has the right to take it from another person. “
Tifa smiled. “Beautiful sentiment...”
“But damn unrealistic,” added Barret. “Sounds to me like you’re short on experience.”
Tifa shook her head. “Barret, I think he has seen more combat then both of us combined.”
The gun armed black man looked over to her. “Why do you say that?”
“Vash has more battle scars then I have ever seen. Unless he was in some horrible accident, then he must have seen a lot of action”
“That,” Barret replied, “Or he’s damn sloppy. I want to see how good he is before I trust him to watch my back.”
Vash sighed. There was a plus and a minus to everything. On Gunsmoke, even prior to the July City debacle he was still the most famous gunman on the plant. On this world, he didn’t have the infamy of being the dreaded “Humanoid Typhoon” but at the same time, he didn’t have his reputation as the greatest gunman in the world. While the reputation could be a double-edged sword, it kept him in the green and guaranteed him work wherever he went. Oh well, some times you just have to start over…
Vash smiled widely. “Does anyone have a coin I can borrow?” he asked.
“What do you need a coin for?” asked Tifa.
Vash kept smiling. “Oh, I just want to show you a trick. I think it’ll impress Barret here....”
Berret blinked. “How the %^@$ do you expect to impress me with a coin trick?”
Tifa sighed and handed Vash a one Gil coin. “Here.” “Danke danke…” Vash flipped the coin in the air a few times, studying its movement intently.
“What the hell is he doing?” muttered Barret.
Vash the Stampede smiled. Time make his reputation. He flipped the coin into the air, over his head and in one smooth, lightning fast motion he stepped forward, drew his gun, and fired behind him.
“Hey!” Tifa exclaimed, “No guns in my bar!”
“Sorry,” muttered Vash. He stepped over and picked up the fallen coin. “Want this back?”
Tifa scowled and torn it from his hands. “While I...” she froze mid sentence and looked at the object in her hand. “What the?”
“What’s the problem,” asked Barret.
Tifa held up the one Gil piece. Perfectly through the center was a single bullet hole.
Barret looked at the coin, then looked at Vash. His voice containing no shortage of awe, he said, “We’re doing a job tonight. Be there.”
“Happy to help,” replied Vash.
