One lousy ship captain had to be suspicious enough to demand Customs IDs at the airlock. The troops got nervous enough to attack instead of calling back to Ranma who could fake or forge the right IDs from the real ones they'd taken from actual customs agents.
That freighter captain's second mate had sent a distress call right before the boarding party had taken the bridge, triggering the blowing of covers among all the other ships who were being quietly taken by rebel troops disguised as customs agents just walking to their points from which they could have effortlessly drawn blasters and taken the ships.
Ranko had ordered a warning barrage across their bows and transmitted the command to the convoy surrender. Most complied, but one of the escort captains with more balls than brains had ordered his TIE fighter squadron launched. They'd quickly subdued the mother ship. That captain's balls shrank fast under a turbolaser barrage, but the damage had been done and those lousy fighters were too nimble and fast, and were evading her turbolasers while raking her own ship with their fire.
It couldn't get any worse.
Ranko's eyes squeezed shut in misery as the Universe, tempted by the challenge, rose to meet it in the form of a Victory class Star Destroyer dropping out of hyperspace with two escorts right in the midst of their tangle of freighters in disarray, corvettes scattered, one with leaking shields and small parts of its hull afire, two dreadnoughts firing at a dozen TIE fighters and everyone suddenly screaming for help.
She tensed. Her brother's ship was gone.
