Nuclear Fusion: Getting Paid and Shooting the Breeze [Episode 48713]

by PsyckoSama

“Hey, y’all,” came the Sheriff’s voice from behind them.

Vash and Rogue turned around before they could get the stranger’s name to face the town’s lawman.

“I’ve got y‘er pay, but don’t you be skippin’ town now, ya hear?”

Vash nodded. “Of course not!”

“How much is it?” asked Rogue.

“Five-hundread Bottle-caps, that’s two-fiddy fer each of ya.” he replied. “Now, if ya don’t mind me askin’, why were you so up on gettin’ this right away?”

“I was robbed,” Rogue stated with a sigh. “I wandered into that town of idiots about 25 miles south.”

The Sheriff blinked. “Now why in damnation would a pretty thing like y’erself go there? It ain’t nothin’ but a stinkin’ pit of thieves and bigots! Hell, every one in a while they bring themselves up to these parts trying ta ‘clense the unclean’ as they like ta say. That bunch are one step removed from a raider tribe if ya ask me! I wish we had more men, then we’d go in and clean them varmints out!”

Rogue nodded. “They tried to burn me at the stake.”

The sheriff nodded. “They seem ta like ta do that... you a mutie?”

“What does that have to do with anything?” asked Vash.

Jack nodded. “Mighty defensive... now, I just to be lettin’ ya know, we ain’t got nothin’ ‘gainst muties here. Hell...”

Jack jerked his head toward the window. On the other side was a 8 foot tall hulk-like mutant with gray leathery who was holding a large bore shotgun as if it were come kind of toy.

“That boy over there is Boris, ma chief deputy. He’s a super-mutant.”

Rogue blinked. “Super-mutant?”

Jack chuckled to himself. “You sure as hell ain’t from these parts! Super-mutants are one of them “stable mutations”. They usually ain’t that bright, but are super tough, super strong, an’ got a lot o’ resistance to radiation. Boris is pretty sharp for a super-mutie.”

Vash smiled. “It’s nice to know he’s on our side.”

“You don’t gotta tell me twice!” exclaimed Jack, “Before I got that big-boy on I had ta deal with all kinda of tough hombres who would git all liquored up and raise some holy hell. Once I got Boris on the job, all the tough guys got a lot more humble!”

Vash chuckled. “Well, remind me not to start any fights!”

“I’ll be doin’ that.” Replied Jack with a smile. “Well, hell, I never your name stranger. What is it?”

Vash sighed, hoping the sheriff wouldn’t make a scene. “I’m Vash the Stampede, and she’s Rogue.”

Jack laughed. “Yeah, you and every other wanna-be badass this side of the dust-bowl. Who are ya really.”

“Vash the Stampede.” He responded, “I really am Vash the Stampede.”

The Sheriff nodded. “I still don’t believe ya, but I ain’t got nothin’ ‘gainst ya even if you are. Just follow the rules, and don’t hurt nobody.”

Vash nodded. “Thanks. If only more towns were like this.”

Jack chuckled. “We try our best.” He looked over to Rogue. “So, those bastards took ya fer everything?”

Rogue nodded. “Everything, even my clothes.”

Jack smiled. “Ya know, tell Jenny down at the store I sent ya, she’ll give ya’ll a discount.”

“Thank you,” Rogue replied, “Thank you very much.”

“It’s nothing!” Jack nudged Vash on the shoulder. “Knowin’ these Raiders they’re gonna be attacking pretty heavy for the next couple ‘o days. Tonight we’re gonna see if you live up to that name you’re wearing.”

Vash smiled. “I’ll do my best, sir.”

“Well, I’ll best be heading out, gotta prep the defenses and everything. Just talk ta Deloris behind the counter about yur’ room.”

Vash nodded and gave the sheriff a wave as he left.
