As Vash and Rogue left the store, another man watched on... and wondered what to do.
Gene Starwind was an outlaw, a bounty hunter, and a mercenary. He was man constantly dancing on the edge of the law, and stepping over it more times than people realized. He had a reputation of his own - the scarred, red haired outlaw with more than a few tricks up his sleeves. Not the least of which was his Caster Gun, one of the most powerful guns ever made, capable of delivering all sorts of different and eccentric shells... provided he had any to shoot. It was hard enough to find men with the know how to service regular guns and make normal ammunition - finding someone who could make new Caster Shells? That was something Gene had yet to manage.
But right now, his problems had nothing to do with finding ammunition for his special gun. But finding the money to pay off his debts. And to do it before that freak Lowe did something to Jim!
Borrowing from the business man had been the only way for Gene and his young partner Jim to get started... but after a particular string of bad luck, Fred Lowe took Jim as 'collateral' to make sure Gene paid him back. And if Gene couldn't come up with the caps soon... well, Fred would decide to just keep Jim.
Gene would die before that happened, but Fred was a big, important man in the merchant shipping business. Taking on Fred would make him a target almost as big as Vash.
And thus, the dilemma. He'd come to this little town because he'd found some evidence that the leader of the Raiders had a significant bounty on his head - one large enough to pay off Fred. There wouldn't be much left over, but it would get him out of debt. But here was the mother of all bounties, walking down the street. Vash the Stampede. 60,000,000,000 caps on his head, dead or alive. That would do more than just pay off his debts... he'd be made an instant legend too.
But if half the things he'd heard about Vash were true... could he really take the Humanoid Typhoon on, alone? And if he ended up dead or maimed for taking Vash on... who would save Jim?
Gene turned and went back to the saloon. He had some serious thinking to do...
