Leaning back in her chair, Rogue stretched her long legs out in front of her. "Man, I can't wait to eat!"
"I just hope that they have some donuts," Vash told her as he signalled for a waitress.
"What is it with you and donuts?"
"They taste good and I like them."
While the pale girl rolled her eyes, the curvy waitress sauntered over with a definate feminine sway to her hips. "Well, what c'n I get or ya good folks?"
"What do you have?"
"We've got everythin' from low cost meals of only a couple of caps, to fancy one that'll cost ya a lot of 'em."
"What do you recommend?"
"I think that the special ain't half bad and it's only five caps, but if'n ya want somethin'... extra special, I'm sure that I could hlep you handsome."
"Uh... that's okay..."
"You sure, 'cause I wouldn't mind t'all for someone like you..."
"A-HEM!" growled Rogue, "I'm still here and we want food, not... THAT!"
"You have a problem there honey?"
"Sure I do! He's my teacher and you're trying to ... you know.. when we want to eat!"
"Then I 'spose it's true..."
"What is?"
"Thatn' you've gone and claimed him already. Not that I blame you. He's quite the looker, ain't he?"
"That's besides the point!"
"Sugar, that is the point."
Sensing that his charge was about to explode, Vash jumped in. "Two specials, okay?"
"Sure thing. Two specials comin' up."
"Thanks!"
"Don't know why you're thanking her," grumbled Rogue as she watched the woman walk away.
"It's polite, you know."
"Yeah. Especially when she tries to hang all over you."
"Oh come on. You're getting angry over nothing."
"Nothing he says."
"That's right," put in a new voice, "A pretty lil' lady like you ain't got nothin' ta be jealous of."
At the sound of the voice, the pair turned their heads to look and saw a young man standing nearby with a drink in his hand as he swayed on his feet.
"Can we help you?" Rogue asked him.
"Oh, I'm sure that you c'n help me lots. Name's Nate and I've been keepin' an eye on your fine lil' bottom since ya came in."
"That's good for you. But what do you want?"
"I figgered that you might like ta have a couple of drinks wit' me."
Waving her hand in front of her face, Rogue shook her head. "Sorry, but it seems that you've been having enough for the both of us."
"Don' be that way. It was only a couple. I just figgered that I might see if such a fine lookin' lady might wanna be wit' me."
"Uh... No..."
"Come on..," Nate said and reached to grab her.
The ranger blocked him. "She said no."
"I jus' wanna have a bit of fun wit' her."
"Which is what I'm afraid of."
"Den don't be. A guy and a girl, wha' could be more natural like?"
"And she refused. That means that you accept it and move on."
"Who're you to tall me wha' ta do?"
"Her teacher."
"So lemme teach ya not ta boss me 'round," the drunken young man said and took a swing at him.
"You don't have to do this."
"And ya don't have ta tell me what to do!"
Vash slid from his seat and dodged the new blow. Before another could be taken, the ranger reached behind the other man and quickly sent a strike at the back of his head. Nate's eyes rolled up into his head as he passed out, but before he hit the floor, Vash had pulled out another chair to put him in. Once the unconscious drunk was secured, the blond man sat back in his seat and acted like nothing had happened.
"That.. was..," began Rogue.
"Yeah?" asked Vash.
"I don't know... but you were good."
"Thanks."
"You could have killed him, couldn't you?"
"No, I couldn't."
"But you just..."
"I knocked him out because he was bothering you and wouldn't take no for an answer. But he didn't do anything terrible, and killing him for that would be wrong. Hell, it's wrong any way you look at it."
"You didn't do him much of a favor," commented the waitress, as she brought them their plates of food.
"What do you mean?"
"He's going ta have a damn sore head in the mornin' when he wakes up in the jail."
"I didn't want to cause him too many problems."
"He'd have ended up there anyway. Nate here tends ta drink a bit too much. Nice enough kid when he's sober, but he's one of them mean drunks. Usually busts up stuff before he gets sent off to the jail to sleep it off."
"I didn't know that."
"No reason for ya to. Though ya did save us some money today. Fact is, I'll talk ta the boss 'bout lettin' ya have your meals for free."
"Hey, thanks!" Vash told her.
"No problem. Ya enjoy your meal, ya hear?"
"Sure will!" he replied as he and Rogue started eating before:
