"That's because you ate enough for three people," muttered the blond man.
"You wouldn't deny ah starvin' girl somethin' to eat, now would you? Besides, Ah'm still a growin' girl."
"Yeah, but growing which way?"
"What was that?"
"Oh nothing!"
"Yeah, well, are you goin' to really help him?"
"Who?"
"That Gene guy."
The ranger shrugged. "Yeah, why not?"
"Ah guessed so. You are really a softie, you know that?"
"But it's the only way that I know how to be."
"Ah figured that out a while back, but right now, Ah only want one thin'."
"What's that?"
"To get some sleep," she told him as he opened their door. They entered the room and closed the door behind themselves, but didn't notice it. That was due to just one thing.
"I forgot about that," Vash said with an embarrased chuckle.
His student scowled at him. "You forgot that we are supposed to sleep in the same bed?"
"Well... yeah. I mean, I wasn't really paying attention to the fact that we were supposed to sleep together."
"NOT together. You and Ah are supposed to share this bed, but we are not doin' it together."
"But if we're sleeping in the same bed, won't it be together?"
"Ah want you to think about what you just said."
"Why? I didn't say anything... Oh."
"Yeah. 'Oh.' And don't be thinkin' that Ah'm goin' to be agreeing to that idea."
"Oh... I don't I do either."
"That still leaves us with havin' to figure out who sleeps where."
"We could share it," Rogue observed.
"One of us could take it."
"But where would the other person sleep?"
"You could take the floor."
"Who, me?! I'm both the teacher and the guy with the experience. sleeping on the floor won't let me get enough rest!"
"And Ah'm nevah givin' up my chance to sleep in a bed in who knows how long."
"Then I guess that we'll have to share it."
"Ah suppose so."
They went and prepared for bed, getting ready for a night's sleep. Both washed and cleaned, removing boots and jackets and other things that would be cumbersome in bed. It was all done as if it were very nonchalant. But the truth was that both of them were watching the other as they did their own things.
Then they kept watching the other as they got into the bed, both of them with the covers up to their necks, and their hands holding them there. On either side were lights that they shut off in unison. That left them with nothing to do but go to sleep... if they could.
"Is that your feet?" Rogue asked, "They're freezin'!"
"Oh, sorry about that..," apologised Vash as he rolled over in an attempt to get his feet away from her.
It didn't work as he had planned. "If you don't get that leg out from between mine, Ah swear that Ah'll make you move it."
But then it was her turn to try to get comfortable, and not quite succeed. "Umm... can you get your arm out of my face?"
"No problem..," she replied and moved away.
"You're hogging the blankets!"
"Ah am not!"
"Are so!"
"If there's anyone who's hogging the blankets, it's you!"
"It wouldn't!"
"It is!"
"We're not going to get any sleep like this, you know."
"You could still sleep on the floor."
"I'm not!"
"Then Ah suggest that we take a side of the bed and stay there. Agreed?"
"... Yeah."
"Good," she said shifting to her side of the bed.
"Good," he said, sliding to his side.
"Night."
"Night."
And so they tried to go to sleep, but a long night awaited them while:
