Genma's Wish: If I were a wealthy man... [Episode 5088]

Lightning flashed, thunder crackled.

Vast wealth in Japan roughly equated with social position. In order for that to happen, the wealth had to be granted in such a way that Genma couldn't immediately spend it.

So it was that five year old Ranma and his pudgy father were still standing in a yard, however:

• now Saotome is among the Ten Families. Mendo has been bumped down and they're longtime rivals of the Saotomes.
• Genma's father kept the secret of the wealth away from his wastrel son. So Genma can't actually touch any of that money.
• It turns out that Genma is the illegitimate son of a wealthy Westerner. (Rich, Warbucks, etc.)
• Genma is altered slightly. He's still Genma, except he's more like Nabiki when it comes to money.
• the wish works by reducing the Mendo family to paupers. Oopsie!
• something else
