[A.N: I'm actually going to combine a number of the available options in this segment, but consider the battle and flashback threads "open," if you have any better ideas.]
The world after the fall of Tiphares was apparently quite a different one, Alita was learning. After all the struggles between residents of the Scrapyard and the upper echelons, now here were these "faerie" creatures, seeking to dominate the world. Of course, they claimed that they'd always been around, and that this was for humanity's own good, but didn't every conqueror?
The problem was, the faerie might actually pull it off. Though virtually anything metal seemed to hurt them, they could easily destroy or defend themselves against pure machines---"soulless constructs"--- and while the overwhelming amount of mechanization in their systems shielded them against the raw power of magical attacks, cyborgs had almost no protection against faerie mind manipulation. Inversely, humans were harder to manipulate, but easier to harm. Not counting the ex-citizens of Tiphares, who, because of their secret, were completely helpless.
Which brought Alita here. Fully regenerated as a human being due to a side-effect of Destry Nova's "trigger", the former bounty hunter had chased down rumours of a mystical weapon of Power. Faerie magic to cut through faerie magic, she figured. More, the rumours said that the sword knew the true name of the Wild Huntmaster, the faerie leader.
Names had power among the faerie, as did blood oaths. With the name, she could slay the Huntmaster. With the Huntmaster dead, the faerie's tie to this world would be broken, and they'd follow their leader into nonexistence.
Alita winced as the warrior woman met her charge with a vicious backhand slash that the ex-cyborg barely managed to dodge. Feeling her braid cut free of her head, she reminded herself that first she'd have to win the sword. Not an easy task.
