Kodachi, who had been that in truth for more years than she'd been human, drifted in a sort of half-slumber. She was conscious within the sword, but the faerie magic which had infused herself into it deceived her perceptions. Space and time were warped to the being inside the blade, so that decades could pass without her noticing.
It was the faerie version of mercy. She was virtually eternal, but the weight of endless years would not weigh too heavily upon her, for she could not perceive them. It was only when joined with a human mind that the veils surrounding her prison could be truly pierced, and thus far no human had been found to wield her.
The sword broke off its musings as she sensed the approach of a human, the drifting mind snapping sharply into focus. With a joyous heart, she materialized to face her challenger.
The woman---girl, really---was petite in size, perhaps five-foot-three, with a heart-shaped face and black hair tied back in a braid that stretched to her waist. Her form suggested that she was an athlete, but not a serious bodybuilder, even with the female tendency to not bulk up. She was garbed in a poncho-like covering that concealed all but the simplest outline of her body, and a wide-brimmed hat shaded, but did not totally hide, her face.
Kodachi, after untold years of isolation, had never seen anyone more beautiful than this girl, her salvation!
Or at least, potentially so. The formalities must be observed, firstly.
"Hold!" Kodachi cried. "Who dares challenge the Black Rose for possession of this sword?" She shifted into a guard position, ready to attack or defend as needed.
The challenger smiled, shifting into an unarmed stance of her own. "My name's Alita," she replied, then lunged forward at impossible speed.
