Hotaru looked over the screen as the witch turned the monitor towards her. After a few minutes she nodded. "Yes, mam."
sniffle.
The old witch looked at her guest with tears streaming down her cheeks, then turned and sent the reference out to assorted faerie lords.
These were mainly Sidhe. Young children got a break from them. Abused children who had gone through all sorts of nastiness were often kidnapped and adopted as changelings.
Going to a cupboard, the old witch put some cookies on a plate and set them in front of the child. "Here you go, my dear. It'll be just a few more minutes. Can I get you something to drink? Perhaps some milk?"
Hotaru made a face, not caring for milk. Well, when in Rome.
"I've got it, some 'Well Water'," said the witch, busying herself in the kitchen. Ah, there was the crunch of a cookie. Elfin magic would be going to work immediately.
No, it wouldn't do to hurt the poor dear. Adopting her as a changeling was another thing entirely.
Putting the glass of water before Hotaru, the witch was pleased to see the girl's ears rising to points. Once the paperwork, and transformation, was complete - she'd have to see what she could do to get the poor thing her fiance. Or if she didn't want the fiance, at least a start on a happy life. The witch had never been a fairy godmother before, but felt this was an honorable calling.
Hmmm. It looked like the magic of the cookies, the water, and the girl's innate magic were putting in some alterations. Hotaru Tomoe was becoming:
