The shape moved slowly, powered by four gravimetric engines, through the Kuiper Belt of the Solar System. The light from the far sun was enough that an observer could identify the shape. It looked very much like a Hyperion-class Heavy Cruiser, but only at the first glace. There were some differences. The ship was sleeker and a bit smaller than the standard Hyperion-class and lacked some of the weaponry. The name plaque stated the name of this Earth Force Ship. Is was the ‘Orion’ first prototype of the Orion-class Fast Cruiser, a recon and scout vessel. The main change in this ship was that it only had a crew of 6, the rest had been automated to a high degree.
“Ich brech’ die Herzen der stolzesten Frau’n…“
Weapons officer Lieutenant Mario de Monti sang in a low voice. Only he was able to understand the old German song from the 30ies of the last century. And he ignored the stares from Lieutenant Tamara Jagellovsk, the Intel officer of the Orion.
“Mario, shut up,” the Commander of the Orion, Captain Cliff Allister McLane, said with a sign.
“’K, Cliff.”
McLane shook the head, as he heard Mario still humming the song.
“Commander, We got a contact.”
McLane looked at Lieutenant Helga Legrelle, the main Sensory and Communications Officer.
“Maybe it’s an asteroid. Put it in the databank.”
Helga shook her head.
“Nope. No asteroid has a fusion reactor.”
McLane breathed in deep.
“Condition Red. We take a look at it.”
Red lights flashed throughout the ship but there was no crew that could run to their positions, with the exception of the chief Engineer, Hasso Sigbjörnsen.
“Atan, take us to the contact.”
Lieutenant Atan Shubashi nodded. He plotted a course to the contact that would bring them into optical range in three minutes.
Three minutes later the ‘Orion’ floated next to a smaller ship that looked like it was build from wood. Everybody on the bridge stared at the main screen. McLane breathed in deep. What could he do now? He remembered the data from B5’s main databanks. This could turn out like the First Contact with the Minbari.
