There are as many reasons for the departure and low-key life of one Tofuu Ono (Doc Tofu) as there are worldlines, it sometimes seems, but one simply is overlooked much of the time by other worldly Observers, such as the readers of certain manga that parallel the lives of the Nerimans.
That reason? Simple distancing. Put in these terms, Doctor Tofu is simply attempting to preserve Nerima's health, and his own sanity, not to mention the Honor of the Tendos and his beloved, unapproachable Kasumi.
He was still there, just not the Tendo personal physician anymore, as he'd notified Soun by mail some time before. Reasons included nearly breaking Ranma's neck at their first meeting and so many fits of madness over his pent-up feelings for the eldest daughter of the Tendo clan. The fact that Kasumi was the only remaining suitable fiancee should things fail between Ranma and Akane sealed this decision for Tofu. (The good Doctor knew Nabiki too well to think she'd be a good match, one imagines.)
So he soldiered on, treating the many side injuries of the Neriman battle zones and wishing for Fortune to help him in mastering circumstance, and his own unreliable heart and demeanor.
Until a Book happened to fall at his doorstep, giving the only non-hostile rival for a Ranma fiancee the tools he needed to settle matters, once and for all.
Once he got over the shock of the subject matter, Dr. Ono Tofuu decided...
