Like it was at the moment.
"So what did you wish of me Detective Ishikawa?" she asked to the man on the other end of the line.
*"I need help on a case that I'm working on,"* came back through her headset to her.
"Ah yes... The 'Unknown' murderer?"
*"How in the hell do you know about that?!"*
"It's my business to know. As you already knew, or you wouldn't have called me."
A gruff cough sounded from the police detective. *"Damned thing too. Waiting for calls in the middle of the night, voice distorters... I'd bet that you have the call so redirected that I'd never trace it if I wanted to."
"All the price of working with me."
*"Well then 'Whisper', tell me something that I don't know."*
"Fine. According to the information that I gathered, there is one common thread with all of the victims."
*"What? We cleared that already. They're all different ages, backgrounds and lifestyles."*
Nabiki allowed a small smile to curve her lips. "Then you should have looked harder. Apparently every single one of them had something to do with a young lady by the name of Michiko Tanaka, lovely girl, unfortunately deceased. They either worked with her, lived near her, or were around her for some time."
*"And the killings would be connected to that girl?"*
"As far as your own police reports go, she was heading on a downward spiral due to honest bad luck. Had a problem with constantly getting jobs in companies that soon went bankrupt later. Died because she was overworked, tired, and hadn't been able to afford to have her car properly serviced. Which was also to be repossessed."
She could hear the frown in Ishikawa's voice. *"And what? Someone's trying to get revenge for her?"*
"Precisely. According to some witnesses, she had an individual who was terribly concerned about her well being. When she died, it apparently devastated him."
*"So he goes on a vengence quest to kill the ones he figures that have wronged her."*
"Got it in one, as far as I can tell."
*"Since you have all the answers, care to tell me who that would be?"*
"That, my dear Detective, is your job."
*"Great. Well, at least we have something to go on. Thanks."*
"Which is all that I ask for," Nabiki replied and disconnected the line. Then she turned her chair from her desk and gazed out the window.
It was amazing to think that a girl like herself could do something like this. Unlike some others that she could name, she had no illusions as to her abilities, especially in comparision with some of the big companies. But she seemed to have a knack for this sort of thing, and an ability to correlate things to the point where all she had to do would be to look and the answer would be there. However, it wasn't the challenge that had made her start with only a few rumors and a couple of informants.
That had been caused by her mother's death years ago. The police had not had any leads as to who could have done it. She had been forced to watch as they had to go through every lead that they could find to try and ferret out her killer. What she had realized even then was that they needed someone who wasn't on the regular channels and could give them the information that they needed.
And the 'Whisper' had been born. It was easier than she had thought because she hadn't realised how easily kids were dismissed. It was still hard however, and she had been forced to work hard to become the information broker that she was today. Hell, even vigilanties came to her for help!
Smiling to herself, the middle Tendo daugher packed away all her 'special tools' and got ready for bed, satisfied that she had done a good job while:
