"Rei?!" Grandfather Hino was of two minds of this. Nonhuman creatures running about were generally a bad thing. On the other hand, this particular nonhuman creature had a figure that could stop traffic.
Rei cast about wildly for an explanation before remembering the one Ami had come up with. Rei had said at the time that her Grandfather would never ever buy it. "Shikigami." Of course she winced, her Grandfather might be a lech and an idiot, but he'd be able to detect the falsehood.
"Ah, that explains it," said Grandfather Hino with a nod. "A bit different from what I'd expected."
Rei stared as the flimsy unlikely excuse was seized on.
Defective in the meantime finished sniffing around the sacred fire and made a yelp noise, before skulking off to the side and sitting down.
Rei and her Grandfather watched, puzzled, as Defective paid close attention to the crackling fire, interspersed with the occasional whine or yap.
Tail wagging, Defective turned towards the two humans. "He say is okay."
"'He'? 'He' who?" Rei demanded of the crazy mutt.
"Fire spirit say okay. You has nasty temperrr, but is okay and you needs all help you can get," said Defective in reply.
Rei stared.
Grandfather Hino nodded. "That is so very true. URK!"
Rei removed her elbow from her grandfather's side. "Defective, if you're going to be my shikigami, you'll have to be of assistance. If you will get some additional wood?"
"Fetch?"
Rubbing her temple, Rei nodded. "Yes. 'Fetch.' I need to check on my visions."
Defective silently ran off. Minutes passed. Defective returned dragging a tree limb nearly her own size.
"Something tells me this is going to take awhile," said Grandfather Hino as he walked off, rubbing a bruise he'd somehow gotten.
