Shaking himself from the unusual occurrence, and sparing only a moment to watch the "mailbox" as it flailed arms and legs it shouldn't have in an all too humorous attempt to maintain buoyancy in the swiftly flowing body of water he was situated near, Ranma looked up groggily from his seat at the bank of the Nerima canal to see the irate( and somewhat sheepish?) form of his fiance, Akane Tendo, still locked in the follow-through position of her toss. Clear proof that it was her that had assaulted him with the false mail receptacle.
"Jeez, Akane! Wha'dya do that for?" He asked, flipping over the chain-link fence that separated the sidewalk from the swift drop and flowing waters of the canal.
"I've been trying to wake you for the last five minutes. People were starting to stare."
"That's just because they're not used to seeing gorilla-like tomboys thow mailboxes at people."
-WHAP- "Ouch! What'd I do to deserve that?"
"You don't really have to ask, do you? What were you doing in that canal, anyway?"
"How did I get to that canal?" He thought to himself. He must have fallen asleep while swimming to his escape. And, when he washed up, the sunlight heated the water in his clothes. Thus triggering his eventual change to his true gender. What a coincidence that the ocean currents had deposited him in the Nerima canal of all places.
"I bet you were off getting into some fight that is going to come back on you and cause trouble for all of us, and you'll go off on some grand martial arts adventure with Ryoga, or Mousse, or Ukyo, or Shampoo, or even Kuno, and you'll learn a bunch of stupid new techniques, and your position as martial arts star of the town will be affirmed, again." She said with no small amount of hidden jealousy. Why couldn't she ever get into fights that came back to her and caused all sorts of trouble for everyone? So, she could go off on some grand martial arts adventure with Ryoga, or Mousse, or Ukyo, or Shampoo, or even Kuno, and learn a bunch of cool new martial arts techniques. And then, she'd be the new martial arts star of Nerima. Ranma had all the luck.
"Hey, that's not it at all. I was... on a training trip," he lied.
"Uh huh," she drawled sarcastically, pointedly looking over the general state of disrepair he and his clothes were in. "Fine, then lets get to school before we're late." She said, grabbing his hand and dragging him off towards Furinkan.
"Wait a sec," he said snatching his hand back. "I don't have time for school, right now."
"I knew it," she declared. "You've gotten yourself in trouble again, haven't you."
"Uh-I mean...its not...aw, why do you care?" He said stomping off.
"Ranma, wait." She caught his hand and stopped him. "I do care."
He turned back to her in irritation but was caught flat footed when he saw compassion in her eyes, where he was so used to seeing consternation.
"Akane..."
Time seemed to slow down, as they stared into each other's eyes. The light reflecting off the highlights in her hair became diffused, giving her a beauteous glow that encouraged nearby flowers to blossom into full bloom, delighting nearby birds to no end, causing them to burst into harmonious melodies of joyful song. Nearby, a cherub took aim with heart-shaped arrows.
"Yes, Ranma." she cooed, clutching his captured hand possessively.
Think, Saotome. Say something, and make it good.
"You have really manly hands for a girl."
-DONG- :the sound of Cupid's arrow missing its mark, hitting a frying pan and ricocheting back to strike one of the earlier singing birds, causing it to squawk one last sour note before plummeting from the sky and crushing the newly blossomed flowers.
As the previously beauteous glow from the girl turned a violent red and the pigtailed young man was launched skyward, he couldn't help but wonder -and not for the first time, I might add- how easy it was for him to ingest his own foot.
Ah, the eternal spring of young love...
