The lights flickered and shifted to red and a klaxon sounded briefly.
"-or not," finished Ranma.
"Paranormal frequency detected! Analysis is Pattern D! Repeat - Pattern D!" a girl's voice sounded over the intercom. "All AEGIS operatives capable of doing so, report in."
Ranma mashed the button. "Saotome here. Location of Daimon?"
"Saotome, a SWAT-X vehicle is being readied, please select a team for backup. Daimon is on the move, will relay data when you are on the move."
"Excuse me, 'SWAT-X' is AEGIS?" Nabiki Tendo asked. "I thought it was just some top secret elite police organization."
"It is, in a manner of speaking," said Ranma offhandedly. "Special Weapons And Tactics - Xtreme was developed as a convenient cover we could use to operate openly but also with some degree of secrecy. They want me to select a team for backup, which means most of you would be in the van watching me and Hotaru deal with it, but that might be good experience too. Okay, you - Miss Tendo."
"ME?!" Nabiki asked, feeling that bridge-bunny was a much safer and less eventful designation.
"Yeah, might as well get that knack of yours for seeing through illusions some exercise," said Ranma. "Umi, Fuu, and Hikaru are probably at home. Take too long to get them." Ranma's eyes stopped on the sole alien in the group. "You. Setsuna too."
"Why me?" Setsuna asked nervously.
"Simple. You've met one of the Invaders. This is a Daimon. Or youma. Or whatever they call this year's model. Might as well see both. Stay in the APC and videotape it, we'll show it the next class." Ranma nodded. "Let's go!"
As they hustled after Ranma, the alien cleared her throat. "Excuse me, but why me in particular?"
"We don't get many Salusians, Kryn, or other relatively friendly aliens in AEGIS. Mainly the ones that do end up in the Tech division. As I understand it, your own government requested you work with Operations. I want to see what you've got that is going to help us out -"
