"Well, thank you for your help, Mr. Gabriev." Akane said as they finished tying up the bandits.
Gourry shrugged. "It wasn't a problem. And call me Gourry."
"Gourry, then."
"So where'd you learn to fight like that?"
Akane smiled at a private joke. "My father's a pacifist."
"Huh? What's that got to do with how you fight?"
Akane grinned broadly. "Daddy didn't want to teach me any weapons because those are 'Tools of Violence.' At the same time, he wanted me to be able to defend myself if I needed to. So he taught me to fight unarmed, instead."
Gourry looked back at the bound bandits, and noted the broken bones and bruised skin. "That... doesn't look very peaceful to me."
Akane shrugged. "Sometimes, one must act to prevent injustice. If I had just walked by, I would never again been able to call myself a Champion of Justice. Maybe Daddy would have been able to find a peaceful way to resolve that situation, but that was the best I could do."
"Ah. Well, you did real good, though. I thought I was going to have to save you when you fell from that tree."
Akane giggled and scratched the back of her head, embarrassed. "Yes... well... I thought it might make me look more... impressive. And I, kinda... slipped." Akane looked Gourry over a moment, and then asked, "Are you a mercenary?"
Gourry blinked. "Um, yeah, when I need to be."
"Are you on a mission right now?"
"No..."
"And are you a Friend of Justice?"
Gourry scratched his head. "Uh... I try to do the right thing, if that's what you mean..."
Akane nodded to herself. "Then I'd like to hire you to help me find my father."
Gourry blinked again. "Why? Did something happen to him?"
Akane shrugged. "Not that I know of, but I don't know for sure. And Daddy's sometime too pacifistic for his own good, so I'd feel better if I was there to watch over him myself."
