Ranma realized is that what he needed in his life was a clean slate, to start off all fresh and new as to be sure not to have anything go wrong! No, seppuku contract, no Neko-Ken no Jusenkyo, no Amazons, and sure as hell no fiancees!

"I wish that I could go back in time before I made the very first mistake in my life!"

Mihoshi gets something right! Ranma ends up just where he wanted to be.
Mihoshi goofs. Ranma is sent back to when he was just a baby and he had an idea that his first 'mistake' was the smell comming from his pants
Ranma's first mistake was being born in the 1st place. So he's sent into a past incarnation.
