"...when a guy named Soun Tendo sold the engagement between his family and the Saotome family to pay his taxes right after his wife's death," Asuka finished.
There were several reactions to this revelation. Soun turned snow white and twitched. Genma cried, "Tendo, how COULD you?" (conveniently forgetting Ukyo, the Daikokujis, and at least one other incident.) Ranma simply stared. Kasumi uttered the predictable "Oh my." Nabiki choked on her rice cracker.
Of them all, however, ONLY Nabiki truly grasped the implications of this. After all of the arguments, fiancees, repair bills, and events since Ranma's arrival, it all turned out to be pointless - there WAS no Tendo arrangement. No reason at all that "the schools MUST be united." Though since Akane practiced only basic kempo karate techniques under the name of "Anything Goes," knowing no special techniques or katas unique to the style, much less her individual school, there wasn't really a school to unite to the Saotome one, anyway. But THAT was something else no one had clued in on.
It meant that the Saotomes had racked up considerable amounts owed to her family in property damage and grocery bills...but that the sheer pressure and mental anguish they'd put him through, in addition to the income generated off Ranma balanced it out, since it was done for no reason It also meant that there was no reason for Ranma and his father to stay here, or to protect Akane from the other fiancees or anyone else...and even discounting Happosai and Kuno, the fiancees would likely declare it "Akane-hunting season" for interfering in their legitimate quest to land Ranma. Little sister had made no friends on that score. For that matter, neither had she herself.
That was, of course, unless some new magical prince kidnapped Akane first. And Nabiki didn't like her father or Kuno's chances of attempting a rescue.
As much as Nabiki hated to admit it, their lives as they stood required them to have SOME hold over Ranma. With that conclusion, she began to scheme ways to acquire one.
