Back then, her family had lived next door to the Saotomes, and her 'bestest of friends' had been the little boy in the house next to hers. They had played together every single day to the point that the way to find one was to find the other. Which was odd, seeing as he was more physical and she was more intellectual, even then. Perhaps the two of them had balanced each other out.
Whatever the reason for their friendship, it had been there. Both of them had enjoyed each other's company and always thought of games they could play together. There was never any time when it had been otherwise, even with the age and gender differences.
They had even decided to be together 'forever', which at the time would be when they became grown ups to their young minds. To ensure that, she had suggested that they both get into Todai, as being in the same university would mean that they would be in the same place and it would be the best place to go to school. Ranma had complained at the thought of going to even more school, but hadn't wanted to be left behind, so he had pinky sworn with her that they would both get in.
Seeing that exchange had gotten both mothers into a giggly state and they had thought it just so cute the way that they did it. As they thought about it, it did seem to them that their children did get along together. Even the fathers agreed that the two youngsters seemed to be heading to something else. And if they were, why not help them along?
An arrangement was conditionally agreed to, with Genma giving a rather dubious go ahead. The children had been asked and though Ranma had thought that getting married was 'icky', it didn't seem so bad to do it with his friend. So the two had been engaged, though nothing changed for the pair.
Genma had decided to take Ranma on the 'neccessary' training trip soon after.
That had left her with only memories and pictures, one of which she had with her. It was of the two of them making a sandcastle with his parents in the background. They were sitting together with bright smiles on their faces and sand on their clothes. It was a moment taken out of a time of simple pleasures and innocent fun.
Just thinking about it put a little smile on Maya's face as she headed to meet her fiance while:
