It was bound to happen.
This was an argument that had been brewing from before this whole ordeal began. Both were extremely proud beings, and both were used to doing whatever it took to get what they wanted. Unfortunately, both Knuckles and Rouge had one thing else in common as well...
Both were extremely self-centered and lacking in empathy. While this made it easy for them to do their respective jobs without second thought, it was not very conductive to starting a personal relationship. (A fact Sonic or Tails - probably Knuckles only friends - could easily attest to.)
Fact of the matter was, each one was probably the only person the other could have a successful romantic relationship with. They were probably the only ones who could fully understand each other's lives.
But any relationship has its low points.
And with the personalities in question... it was a sure bet that those low points would go straight to hell...

Rouge's eye twitched. "What did you just say?" she asked, slowly and deliberately.
"You heard me!" Knuckles shouted back. Ash was quite glad he'd gotten Pikachu out of the way... those two looked ready to tear each other apart. "You've made my life a living Hell since you showed up! Did you decide you wanted to see me suffer in particular, or is this something you do to anyone around you?!"
"Well, I'm sorry this happened! Yes, it's my mistake! But I'm seeing why your competency was called into question!"
"None of this would have happened if you hadn't stolen the Master Emerald!"
"Oh? Would you have preferred it if it had been Eggman again? Or how about Nack? I'm not the only one who's pinched that rock of yours!"
"Yeah, but I always got it back! Even from you! You're just the only one who's been to stupid to learn that!"
"Ha! If I'd wanted to keep your stupid emerald, you'd never have found it!"
"Yeah, right!" Knuckles snarled. "So if you didn't want to keep it, WHY DID YOU KEEP STEALING IT?!"
"It was the only way to get you off that stupid island of yours!!"
"What does that have to do with anything?!"
"Well sorry! I thought you'd like going someplace different for a date..."
There was a moment of dead silence, as both mobians realized what Rouge had just said.
"D-date?!"
"Damnit!" Rouge cursed. "This is not how I wanted this to come out!"
"You steal the Master Emerald, drag it and me all over the world, and you call that a date?!"
Rouge sniffed. "What... it wasn't like I could just fly up and say 'hey, how about a date!' The moment I stepped foot on that island, you got all paranoid about that damned stone! So if that's what it took, than I was up for a game of chase!"
Knuckles just stared at her for a few moments, sputtering. "You... you... YOU!..."
Rouge snapped. "Me what?!"
"You self-centered fool!" he screamed, leveling a punch at a nearby tree, toppling it in the process. "You think I would want to have anything to do with you after this?! I never want to see you again!!" He yelled, stomping off through the forest.
Rouge blinked. Then she yelled after him, "Bull-headed jerk!! I must have been out of my mind to even have considered you!!"
Meanwhile, the two trainers and the ex-pokemon looked on, certain they were seeing the end of something.
Brock, on the other hand, was shaking his head. Now he had to deal with a second pair of 'More-Than-Friends' in utter denial...
