"What is that gem anyway?" Misty asked, fishing a spare T-shirt from her backpack and tossing it to Rouge.
"Thanks" Rouge said, grabbing the shirt in mid-air and putting it on. I managed to just barely reach her hips, and was definitely more than a little tight around the chest. "This is a Chaos Emerald. One of seven. They're very powerful, and the reason we're here. We may need them in order to get home."
Ash moved over to Pikachu and lifted his head, making sure he was okay. "But what about Pikachu and the others? What happened to them?"
"What do you mean?"
"Huh?" Ash asked, a little confused.
"I get it!" Brock interjected. "You and Knuckles must've been born like that, instead of being transformed like the others!"
"Oh!" Ash said, pulling out his PokeDex. "Here, take a look at this." He said as he handed it to her.
"Oooh!" Rouge said as the looked over Pikachu's data. She fiddled with the buttons a while, eventually skimming through a few other PokeDex entries. A few of the animals did bear an awfully close resemblance to the other Mobians.
"That's what we looked like a day ago." Noctowl said as he came up behind her, pointing to a picture of his former self.
"I found it yesterday," Bayleef said sadly. "And when I touched it... this happened." she finished, gesturing to herself and the others.
Rouge thought for a moment, still looking through the Pokedex, while keeping her ears tuned to what everyone was saying. "Hmmm... I really don't know how that happened. Maybe... Aha!" She showed the PokeDex to Ash, showing the entry on Raichu. "Accodring to this, Pikachus, which I guess your friend here was, turn into these when exposed to a 'Thunder Stone.' Chaos Emeralds do give off a lot of energy, which can be used by some people. I've seen it happen, but Knuckles knows more than I do..." Knuckles trailed off as Knuckles moaned and brushed her leg as he started to wake up.
"Well! Speak of the Echidna!" Knuckles' eyes fluttered open to see Rouge staning over him. "Nice to see you're finally awake!"
"What did you do that for?!" Knuckles demanded as he got to his feet.
"Because if I hadn't," Rouge said, placing a hand on her hip, "you and Sparky over there..." She pointed to the also-awakening Pikachu, "...would've started this whole mess again! Or do you want to keep mutating the countryside?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Here." She said, showing him the PokeDex. "Yesterday, They all were like this. The Chaos Emerald did this to them."
Knuckles growled. "So where's the Emerald now?"
"Don't worry, I have it." Rouge said.
"At least something's gone right today..." he muttered.
"And what is that supposed to mean?"
"You know very well what I'm talking about!" Knuckles snapped, that Dark Wave, among the other events of the past few days, had left him rather irritated with his erstwhile teammate. "Do you always leave despair in your wake, or am I just a special case?"
Brock's eyes widended(if such a thing were possible). While it was true that Ash and Misty had been getting along a lot better since they started on this journey, he still easily recognized the sure signs of an impending argument. "Ash!" he called. "You'd better get back here now!"
