Rei Ichinohei, the Kunoichi Kitten, was with Rei Bond. They were hunting specialized equipment. In the case of the former - ninja tools and in the case of the latter - high tech gadgetry and spare rounds for her Walther PPKatt.
That left:
Rei Saotome of the Anything Goes School Of Indiscriminate Grappling, Level 1 Martial Artist
Rei Ayanami the XIV, Eva Pilot, Level 1.
Rei Natsume, Cyborg Catgirl Adventuress, Level 1
Rei Amuro, New Type Pilot, level 1
Naturally, this group was an odd one that had trouble keeping a low profile.
Such as riding on a train when someone decided to revive the ancient custom of the chikan. In other words, a groper in a train.
The reply of Rei Saotome to some guy she didn't know rubbing his hand over her butt cheeks like that was fairly predictable.
"Ecchi!" Wham!
The remainder of the crowd beheld the spectacle of a pigtailed girl deliver a truly impressive uppercut to a middleaged sarariman of sufficient force that he bounced off the ceiling.
At which point the crowd shrugged and returned to their conversations. They would have blithely ignored the groping, so frankly they couldn't give a whit about the groper being flattened.
If catburglar Rei had been present, the guy would have found every last penny he had owned being appropriated. As it was he'd need the money for the doctor's copay later.
"Hmph. Who did he think he was, Captain Kirk?" Rei Saotome declared. "Some places you should just not boldly go."
"Does that count as a random monster?" Rei Amuro asked. "Do we get group experience for it?"
There were layers of weirdness going on at NERV Central.
Not just a bunch of people acting out old Monty Python sketches. (It would turn out later that a contest on Channel 9 for the best Monty Python re-enactment would net the winners a fabulous all-expense-paid trip to Australia, which had become a good deal wetter after Antarctica was nuked.)
Not just that Balthazar had apparently decided to take old TV series and use various editing and CGI techniques to make new ones which were now running on Channel 9.
On second thought that was worthy of more detail. Not only did "he" put together programs like "the Muppet Show with our very special guest stars Monty Python!" but programs that were even more bizarre than that. "My Mother The Car" had become "My Mother The Evangelion" which wasn't quite so strange, but apparently "Dukes of Hazard" had fused with "El Hazzard" and now Ifurita was wearing a pair of Daisy Dukes and flirting with Makoto Duke while working for Boss Jinnai. "Gilligan's Island" had become fused with "Tenchi Muyo" to become "Mihoshi's Island".
(Kiyone as the Skipper, Mihoshi as Gilligan, Tenchi Masaki as the young Ingenue, Ryoko as a pirate, the millionaire heiresses Ayeka and Sasami, the Professor played by child genius Washuu. What surprised all of the viewers was how well it actually worked.)
As Channel 9 continued to produce these oddities, more and more people were watching (often in stunned disbelief at things like that Vash The Stampede had appeared in an episode of Bonanza and they'd never noticed before) and therefore ignoring all sorts of things like security monitors and LCL levels.
So when Captain Spaulding started faxing papers to the Pentagon, nobody really noticed as they were all talking about how Ataru and Lum from "Urusei Yatsura" were caught peeking in the window during an episode of "Friends" or the Scooby Gang from "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" had actually met the Scooby Gang from "Scooby Doo" or at least had the Mystery Machine in the background during several scenes.
The really bizarre stuff? Sergeant Hans Schultz, originally from NERV Germany, didn't drink. Yet whatever he had seen down in Terminal Dogma had him passed out under the table. (From one beer, alas.)
The comissary was putting out real edible food. (Many of those noting this decided this was a Sign Of The Apocalypse!)
Worse were the stories of how the various young girls had been hidden away by none other than Gendo himself, where they were being either (depending on who was telling the story) subjected to foul ancient rites and intended for human sacrifice to his dark masters! OR he was performed bizarre sexual deviancies upon them, using drugs and torture to break them before he slaked his inhuman lusts! OR he had discovered they were conspiring against them and they were already dead!
The rumors, however, could not keep up with the truth.
The Statuette was a gateway of power.
It had barely been able to convert Ritsuko, but once it had the connection was twice as strong. With Ritsuko and Maya, the connection strength had doubled again at Rei's conversion.
As more converted to Bast's faith and especially as they acted in a manner keeping with the holy festival at Bubastis, so too did the strength of the Statuette increase.
Lillith shuddered as the role of Second Angel was set aside and for a moment the gate was fully open and a crumbling Heliopolis was visible.
Then Lillith began to stir and then to stand. Once on her feet, the 90 foot tall giantess found herself clothed in the manner first dictated by the scratch inflicted by Catburglar Rei Lupin.
Though it might have repercussions as Lillith was now not only a catgirl but a
