Ranma ran. He just wanted to get away from that pit of c-c-c…monsters. He didn’t look where he ran and stumbled over a root. Normally he wouldn’t have stumbled, but when he did he changed his direction as he got back up.
A few minutes later he came to a low cliff and found a cave. He looked around in a rush and than ran into the protective darkness of the cave. He needed some time to see at least a bit of his surroundings. It didn’t help him much. Something brushed over his leg and his body began to lock up. It felt like his legs fell asleep, but it covered his whole body. The last thing he noticed, before he lost consciousness, was that he couldn’t move.
He regained consciousness in a comfortable seat. He tried to stand up, but he still wasn’t able to move anything below his head. A draft feeling caused him look down. His shredded Gi had disappeared and he was just clothed in his shorts.
A man, not really solid looking, appeared in front of him. He was around 6 feet tall and had dark hair, brown-blue eyes and a light tan. He smiled a bit forced.
The man said something, but Ranma wasn’t able to understand a thing. Ranma gave him a blank look, but the man doesn’t even notice it. But the voice had a tone that gave Ranma the feeling that it was important.
“I don’t understand,” Ranma said, but the man disappereared.
A flat screen appeared where the man had been and started to show some recordings. Ranmas gaze was locked on the screen and he didn’t really notice the feeling of an injection that was pressed against his arm, neither the short pain in his head.
The screen showed a blue-white-brown marble. He had seen some pictures and maps and knew that this marble was Earth. But he failed to see the two additional continents, one Greenland-sized in the Atlantic and one Australia-sized in the Pacific.
Than the scene changed and made Ranma speechless. He saw hundreds of silvery-blue spheres with rings around their equator. They slowly moved away from the Earth. The camera followed them on their flight by the moon. Everything happened without a sound. The spheres accelerated and disappeared in a flash of light.
The scene changed. Ranma could see the silver-blue spheres again. He somehow knew that these spheres were space ships. And he could see some other ships. Like the other ships they where spherical, but of a black color, without the ring around the equator and much smaller. From one moment to the other the black ships were surrounded by deep red transparent bubbles and the big silver-blue ships by bright green transparent bubbles. Bright yellow, red and green beams of light began to fill the space between the silver-blue and the black ship and slammed in the bubbles. Ranma knew that he witnessed a space battle, silver-blue versus black. Now and than a new bright sun seem to appear for a brief moment. There wasn’t a single sound, not like the space battles in some of the Anime he had seen. It was spooky.
Again the scene changed. This time Ranma could see a city, like Tokyo. Many skyscrapers, but some of them taller than any building he knew. But the city seemed to be a battleground. He watched a squad of human soldiers, in strange uniforms and armed with strange weapons. The squad leader yelled orders in that strange language. One of the soldiers took a yellow energy beam into his chest and collapsed. A big shape moved around a corner in the background. The shape was at least twelve feet tall, had black skin, a halfspheric head with three red glowing eyes and four arms. The Beast was armed with two big energy rifles, carrying each with two of its arms.
A massacre followed. The human soldiers didn’t stand a chance. Their energy beams had the same effect on the Beast, as peas thrown against a tank. The scene disappeared in a flash of light when a wounded soldier activated some kind of grenade.
Again the scene changed to a space battle, but this time it took place over earth. Silvery-blue ships blew up and the camera paned to the Australia-sized continent in the Pacific. A whole squadron of the black ships got in position and dropped a cloud of small objects. These objects entered the atmosphere and some time later Ranma could see a flash of light down on the continent, followed by hundreds and thousands all over the continent. Maybe ten minutes later a gigantic cloud of dust hung over the continent. Then the dust seemed to disappear in a graphic. The continent had disappeared, destroyed by bombs of gigantic payload. Ranma didn’t know it but the complete and utter destruction of this continent was the cause of a nuclear winter and the following last ice-age on earth.
The scene changes again. Again it showed a city. And a squad of human soldiers, killed shortly after the begin of the scene by a Beast. The scenes changed multiple times. Every time humans lost.
A scene of a gigantic cave filled with equally gigantic machines. A voice explained the machines in the strange language. Again scenes of city and space battles, but this time the Beasts ran away. Ranma already knew that the small black ships belonged to the Beasts. And the big silvery-blue ships to the humans.
In between he could see a scene with a city battle. It showed a human, but he was different. He looked pretty normal, but he fought with a Beast in hand-to-hand combat and the Beast got its ass handed to it.
The recording stopped. Ranma knew that he just watched a war. A war that took place in a distant past. A war mankind barley won. Than he lost consciousness again.
He didn’t know how long he was unconscious when he awoke. He was back in the cave. He wanted to think of the recording as a dream, but he couldn’t. He was clothed in a smaller version of the uniform the soldiers wore in the recording. A light green uniform, much like an American Army-uniform and a symbol he had seen on the ships. It was much like the UN-symbol, but included the two additional continents Earth had in the distant past.
He got up. As he still was only 8 years old, the recording had a big impact on him. He swore to himself to be the best Martial Artist ever. Good enough to fight a Best if needed. And he would wear the uniform as a remembrance of the soldier in the recording.
He didn’t know that someone watched him.
“Good luck, Ranma,” a voice said, but Ranma wasn’t able to hear it.
The voice belonged to an entity, older than the Lemurians, the first mankind from the 50000 year old recording. It had seen the war with the Beasts and the collapse of the Lemurian Empire. And it had seen the fall of the second mankind under Queen Serenity of the moon. It hoped that there wouldn’t be a fourth mankind.
It would watch Ranma. Watch how his body adapted to the genetic changes caused by the old lemurian retro-virus and how his brain would react to the small neural implant place by a lemurian transmat device.
