“Stop it, Saffron! What do you hope to accomplish with this destruction?!” Ranma used the Soul of ice along with the Gekkaja to the best of his abilities. If it wasn’t for them, the wave of fire would have overtaken him by now. He struck the Gekkaja into the ground and concentrated, concentrated on saving all of his friends, who where all behind him. They were all severely wounded from the fight against the phoenix. In fact, they had all been knocked unconscious by Saffron’s brutal onslaught. A bead of sweat ran down Ranma’s brow as he concentrated with all his will.
In the center of the wave, consumed by fire and yet unharmed by it, Saffron stood firmly. A glint of maniacal resolve in his eyes, he looked directly at Ranma and sneered, “Pathetic mortal. You should have never stood against the Phoenix King. Your death will be a swift one.” With an inhuman roar that came from Saffron’s throat, the fire that fell from the sky doubled in size and power.
Little by little the ice-shield that Ranma had created began to melt, but Ranma kept feeding ki energy of the Soul of Ice directly to it, so the shield held strong in the face of a volcano’s worth of fire. The fire seemed to keep getting bigger and stronger, but so did the ice. Ranma’s face was one of tired determination, he was on the brink of passing out from exhaustion, but he kept feeding more and more power to the shield.
“I will protect my friends, Saffron!” With a sudden surge of adrenaline Ranma doubled the strength of the shield. “You’ll burn yourself out long before I fall.” His grip on the Gekkaja tightening, a white mist wafted from Ranma’s body. The shield of ice grew denser and colder the more mist Ranma’s body exuded. Behind him, all his friends remained unconscious. “Wake up guys,” Ranma whispered.
The grip of Saffron’s hands on the Kinjakan tightened as he continued to summon fire from the heavens, unseen by the others outside the center of the fire wave; beads of sweat ran down Saffron’s forehead. It took more out of him than he would ever admit. “You’re through, human!”
