"Take that, you freakish animals!! Get away from my Ranchan! He's MINE!! I loveloveLUV him so much - he's my most treasured possession!"
Nabiki feebly tried to backpedal from the insane Ukyo, but her legs were giving out on her. A grey haze started invading the edges of her vision.
Ukyo was still stabbing imaginary rivals in the air. "Don't you know how this story is supposed to go, you bitches?! People in love get to go to the movies and give each other gifts and play house and say "I love you" and Ranchan never said that to me and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!" She screamed the last part directly at Nabiki, appearing to see her again for the first time.
Nabiki tried to say something - try to calm her down, plead for her life, anything - but could only manage a gurgle.
"My Ranchan loves me, he does! I know he does, because he has to - he's mine, I own him, I paid for him, see?" She was talking to the air again. "He was bought and sold, don't you understand? BOUGHT AND SOLD!!"
Suddenly Nabiki felt strong fingers grasp her shoulders from behind. She couldn't tilt her head back to see who had come to her rescue, but she felt herself being pulled slowly and carefully away from the raving, red-eyed bunny, who was still gesticulating with the large kitchen knife.
"What?! Of course I love my Ranchan! I tried to hunt him down and kill him for ten years, isn't that proof enough? That wasn't my fault. He shouldn't have run away, when Daddy bought him for me. But now I've got him back and I'll never never never let him get away again!"
Slender, careful and efficient hands pulled Nabiki's fingers from the still flowing wound and pressed something soft firmly onto it. Nabiki heard what sounded like Akane's frantic voice somewhere in the distance, but she couldn't make out the words. She was too dizzy.
"Why doesn't everybody simply do what I want them to do? God knows I've tried to arrange matters so that everybody can be HAPPY! Didn't I try to hitch Akane with that idiot Ryoga? She should be HAPPY with what I give her! Didn't I try to destroy her love for Ranma, so she could find some other schmuck to be HAPPY with?"
"Hold on, Nabiki-chan," said Kasumi's voice into Nabiki's furry ear. "Help is on the way."
"No no no no no no NO!! Ranma can't own me - that's CRAZY!" Ukyou broke out in laughter that made Kodachi's seem like a polite, sane little giggle. "How can he own me, when I OWN HIM!! You've got it all wrong! HE has to serve ME! He has to stop that nonsense of wanting to be the best martial artist and come work in my restaurant! Every time I imagine that, he's SO HAPPY!"
Kasumi squeezed Nabiki's hand, lending her strength. Nabiki thought she heard sirens approaching.
"Why does it always have to come to SEX?! I don't want it, I don't! It's disgusting! You're EVIL to make me want sex with my Ranchan. I don't want any of that filthy stuff near him! I never asked to have these breasts, to be a girl! Girls have sex with boys, and I CAN'T! When I get my Ranchan to myself, he'll never have to have sex, EVER! We'll just adopt lots of little babies and teach them how to make okonomiyakis and to never never never have any filthy sex. I'll show them how to hide their disgusting bodies, I will!"
The greyness was blotting out almost everything by now. Nabiki felt cold. There was some noise from the direction of the front door, followed by the sound of many feet.
"NOOOOOOOOOO!!! You can't take my Ranchan away from me! You can't make me want him THAT WAY! Don't you understand that's not how this story goes?! He's supposed to be MINE, not I his!"
Nabiki was vaguely aware of being lifted onto something, while the sounds of a scuffle and Ukyo's hysteric screams rang in her ears. She felt a prick on her arm, and a soft coolness flowed through her veins. I wonder if I'll make it...
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"We have a zero six niner," said the policeman into his walkie-talkie. "I repeat: a zero six niner." He turned to Kasumi, who was wringing her hands nervously. "That's our code for 'cursed magical item, spell or wish transforming and enslaving people'."
"Oh. Does it happen a lot?"
"Around here? So often, you'd think there's barely anyone left without a slave collar, genie ring, tattoo or whatever. Here's a brochure with some information. People usually find it helpful."
Kasumi looked down at the colorful, friendly front page of 'So you've been enslaved... A guide to getting out - or getting comfortable.' in her hands. "I- er, yes, thank you."
The officer looked at the gibbering bunnygirl, who was being transported off in a straitjacket, and shook his head sadly. "This kind of thing really gets me down. Usually when some guy tries to enslave someone unwilling, she manages to resist the compulsion somewhat, and sooner or later manages to call us. But sometimes the conflict is just too great... She must have hated that Ranma guy really badly."
"I think..." said Kasumi, "in her own way she loved him, the best way she understood."
"Oh," said the officer. "One of that type... Well!" He straightened up and patted Kasumi's shoulder. "You read that stuff I gave you and give the boys and gals down at the deprogramming center a call. They'll help you with whatever decision you come to."
"Thank you, officer," said Kasumi gratefully, as she followed him to the front door. She bowed farewell to him, as he climbed into the last vehicle in front of the dojo and drove off after the ambulance.
Back inside, she found Akane dissolving in tears, being consoled by Ranma. The situation had shaken everybody so badly that even Shampoo and Kodachi didn't try to interfere.
"They're being transported to the hospital, Master," Kasumi said to Ranma. "The paramedic said that Nabiki had a good chance of making it."
This made Akane shed even more tears, this time out of relief, and Ranma squeezed her hands supportively.
