Or at least that was the way that it seemed to Godai Hayashi. He'd gone through all his time doing the same routine, and it hadn't changed for so long that he could do it just simply by habit. Not that he had tried to spice up his life more than with the debate societies or reading groups. But no matter what his mother said, he doubted that his secret crush, Maki Tsudaka, was going to hear any attempt at asking for a date from him. She was a track and swim team star, and probably would never look at an intellectual like him.
So he simply went along his way, though he did have to wonder. He'd always seen her by that point, running laps around the school grounds. Instead, she hadn't shown up, while he hadn't heard anything about a race. And to make it even stranger, all the other students that would be milling at around that time were missing too...
"Psst!" came a low hiss as he walked by the school fields.
He turned to look as he wondered if he was hearing things. "Who's there?"
"It's me Godai-kun! Over here!"
"Maki?" he asked, spotting the athlete near the sports shed, "What's going on?"
"Come over here!"
"Okay... But if you need help with that history stuff again, why not ask?"
"I don't care about that!"
That made him blink at the short haired brunette. "You don't? But why do you want to... What the heck?! Why do you have cat-ears on?"
"There's a very important reason for that."
"I'm sure that you'll tell me. Maybe a... project on feline outfits for some class..."
"No, and I don't need any help with any schoolwork."
"Then what do you need? I mean, you're always asking me for help during lunch and after school."
"You are dense, aren't you?"
"Huh?"
"I did need help, but not that much."
"So why did you ask me to help you?"
Maki grinned at him. "For the beginning of the reason that I called you here."
"And that is..?"
"This," she replied, and pulled him to her to kiss her.
At first he was shocked, as it was very sudden. Then came worry that something was going on that she didn't really want it. But that was settled quite satisfactorily, and she didn't give him any opportunity to doubt the fact that she wanted exactly what he was giving her.
And with his... rise to the occasion, she was eminently satisfied as well.
Which brought her voice into the chorus of feminine yowls of pleasure from around the fields, on the roof, in the locker rooms, in empty classrooms, closets and all sorts of very happy spots around the school.
Chairman Kihl leaned foward in his chair at the conference table and scowled. "It seems that we can not go on with our plans as they currently are."
SEELE-8 gave a loud snort at the words. "You're just figuring that out?!"
"We all know about that," complained SEELE-4, "But what are we to do about it?"
"We'll have to go to our secondary plans," replied SEELE-9.
"Or whatever level plans we've got left after this mess," grumbled SEELE-6.
"That is true," SEELE-2 agreed. "But what we have to work with is going to take some effort before we can use it."
"What does that mean?!"
"Due to the widespread infection of all our systems, physical and electronic, we are going to have to construct new bases from which to operate. Luckily, we did go in search of places to use. However, it will take more time than originally budgeted before they can be used."
"Why is that?" asked SEELE-10.
"Our Florida complex needs to have the swampland where it is to be built be drained before work begins. The Gobi desert site needs to have all supplies be brought in when the weather is right. And our north Atlantic base has only a time between thawing refreezing to be safe to operate."
"Didn't anyone think to remember the difficulties that the Antarctic expedition caused us. And being there was essential to our plans, while this..."
"These spots were all that we could get with the time and secrecy restraints. Plus... all the others were causing us trouble, and these were the most convienent."
"I'd hate to see the 'inconvienent' ones."
"In any case," Kihl interrupted, "We must get a handle on the current course of events before they get too out of hand."
There was a rumble of agreement from around the table and the Chairman nodded to himself, while:
