For A Birthday/Honey: Character [Episode 68757]

by Kestral

"Errr," said Honey. "Well, it was a sort of martial arts and vaguely a 'harem' show."

"Oh?" said Kasumi. "Middle eastern influences? Do I get to wear that sort of outfit?"

"Uhm, no," said Honey, seeing a side of Kasumi not presented in the manga. She seemed both embarassed and... eager?

"Oh," said Kasumi, looking disappointed now.

"I get any really good fights? Evil sensei out to control the world? Criminal organizations with hordes of low level fighters and a few Boss-types with secret special techniques?" asked Ranma, picturing himself as a Jackie Chan-style Supercop sort.

"Not so much," hedged Honey.

"So how do I get involved in these adventures?" asked Kasumi. "Do I pilot the rescue helicopter? Work with the police?"

"Uhm," said Honey. "Actually, you say 'oh my' a lot and spend most of your time cleaning house and buying groceries."

"Oh," said Kasumi, looking less than pleased with that. Come to think of it, when did she get to do anything exciting?

"So I at least do some cool stuff, right?" said Ranma. "Exotic locations. Snappy lines. Fighting bad guys and kicking butt. Right?" What was a martial arts series without doing some of the princess rescuing or fighting guys with lots of scars and lines like 'your martial arts are pig dung' and stuff like that?

"Well, not so much," hedged Honey.

"So what were they like?" asked Kasumi and Ranma in unison.

"Well," hedged Honey, not really wanting to say.

"If all I do is clean and buy groceries," began Kasumi, seeing the hesitation and trying to extrapolate, "then I must be a Yamato Nadesico in this series? Wear a lot of kimono and get rescued a lot?"

"No, you usually wear what you're wearing now," said Honey.

"I see," said Kasumi.

"The series didn't really deal with you at all," said Honey. "Most of the time, all you really say is 'oh my' or 'dinner's ready' if that."

"I see," said Kasumi, who then did something that was very much out of character for the manga. She frowned.

"If I don't fight bad guys, I'm not a villain am I?" asked Ranma, a little concerned.

"Oh no, no not at all," quickly appended Honey. "You just fight a few individuals regularly and the occasional challenger. Most of the time you simply get into fights because you say something without thinking about it."

"That does happen a lot," said Kasumi.

"Yeah, it does," said Ranma.

There was an uncomfortable silence at the table, as each considered the situation.

"Is Akane Ranma's fiancee in this manga?" asked Kasumi.

"Yes," agreed Honey. "In fact, according to the writer - they're the only real couple in the series."

"That uncute tomboy?" asked Ranma.

Honey nodded, sensing this was not going in at all the direction she wanted.

"I can't escape? I'm not going to be a martial arts hero? Pop is RIGHT?" asked Ranma, sure that the last was a sign of the Apocalypse. "I'm fated to marry Akane, take over the dojo, and he's been right all along about it being my fate?!"

"Well, yes," said Honey.

"Neither Shampoo nor Ukyo will be happy about that," said Kasumi.

"MAJOR understatement," said Ranma. "Hmmm."
