"It's a fan," she noted dryly.
How was she supposed to put fear in the hearts of evil and inspire the hearts of the good with a folding fan?
She unfurled it and noticed that it was rather reflective, made of some bright metal that wasn't gold. It seemed to catch the light quite easily, almost seemed to be making it's own light actually.
She snapped it closed solidly in a bit of disgust and flinched with a sharp cry as she smacked it closed, dropping it to the ground. It wasn't exactly painful, but it had stung into her other hand with more force than she'd expected. It was like catching a softball, almost.
"Damn thing is solid," she muttered. "I'll give it that. That surprised me, but it's hardly painful enough to be a good weapon."
She shook her arms, her skeptical nature was still strong, after all she had no telling whether the deck had provided her with anything of use or not. She frowned and reached down to pick up the fan again and unfurled it, taking the time to look over it with a little more care.
She didn't quite understand how such a thin fan could give such a thorough smack when she'd closed it before. A club or something similar she'd expect to give as good as that. However, as she looked over the fan she noted something else.
Tracing a finger along the edge of the metallic cloth she noted with some surprise as a streak of blood welled up along the finger. She blinked and looked around the room for a moment before finding what she wanted. A lone candle sitting on a desk near the elves stuff.
One quick swipe later and half the candle dropped to the floor.
"Whoa," Nabiki said.
She looked even more closely at the fan and noted an array of symbols engraved upon the fan. Kanji that she recognized.
She read one of the kanji aloud, the symbol for shine that was repeated many times on both sides, and had to squint her eyes closed for a moment as a bright, white light filled the room, as if it were a fluorescent light or something. As a paladin of a sun goddess, Nabiki was shielded from the more extreme problems drow faced with daylight, but sudden bright light still was painful.
A repeat of the kanji brought the light to calm down, and she moved on to the next symbol.
"Rainbow," she whispered, the fan started to glow with multiple colors and she blinked, waving the fan experimentally.
With that movement the rainbow flashed outward in a confusing blast that cascaded over the room, outward from Nabiki.
"Uh...right," Nabiki said, as she digested her first sight of a color spray. She cleared her throat and moved on to the next one. "Heat...? Oh, maybe shouldn't have said that..."
As she spoke she was already waving the fan to discharge whatever effect she'd summoned out of it, and blinked as the line of searingly bright light lashed away from her and burned through the wall across from her.
"...definitely need to think before I speak with this," she decided, sweatdropping, as she moved to the last symbol. The previous symbols were engraved repetively on both sides, but this one appeared only once on either side of the fan. "Sun."
Unfortunately, she waved the fan downward. Following that was a sharp burst of light and heat, followed by a dizzy Nabiki, soot-covered at the center of a circle of charred wooden floor.
Nabiki coughed once and blinked as she looked back at the fan.
"Okay, this could be useful," she admitted. "The fact I can carry around without getting arrested is a plus."
