Lamp Of Mihoshi: Not a bright future at all (DARK) [Episode 74583]

by Kestral

"So what's all this stuff?" Ranma asked Mihoshi. "It looks like there used to be a lotta buildings and such here."

"I don't know," confessed Mihoshi. "Lemmee see. I think I can use my magic to show what happened."

There was a flare of light so bright Ranma couldn't see for a moment and then he gaped.

Towers stretched up into the sky, lit in all the colors of the rainbow and banners proclaimed something in a language he couldn't decipher. Judging from the colors it was a happy occasion.

The crowds around him were clearly human. Tall and handsome folk, Western or gaijin from the look of them. Children played at some form of tag, running through the crowd and cheerful music teased his ears from some source nearby.

Everywhere he looked was something to focus his attention on. Something very like huge cinnamon rolls were pulled fresh from ovens and drizzled with glaze. Over there was ice cream or something darn close being fixed in an array of styles. Over that way the scents of hot mulled cider vied with some berry drink.

Discs carried some of the festival goers along above the walkways. Other discs looked like elevators and went along those fanciful towers to load and unload. Skyships of some kind floated off not too far away, looking like some fanciful thing out of one of Miyazaki's films.

"It's beautiful-" breathed Ranma, touched somewhere in his soul by something of the scene. Or perhaps it was merely the food on display.

Someone started speaking, her voice echoing through the crowd and the music trailing off in response.

"I think I can translate this," said Mihoshi, chewing her lip and trying to focus her magic again.

"kliandan vuu. Nandab with great difficulty and effort but the treaties have at last been signed. Peace kevroi in our time. Praise be yuthem. Peace at last," said the woman's voice. "With our new treaties will come a new age of prosperity where we-"

Ranma glanced up. "Oh hell."

Something like glowing comets started smashing into the the skyships as a series of water plumes shot up from the distant harbor.

"-there must be some mistake," the woman's voice was saying. "Someone open a communications line. We have a treaty!"

Ranma watched as thin-limbed monsters landed in the crowd, their front arms scythes that sheared through festival goers. Showers of gore and blood went through him like he was a ghost as he watched the figures going around on an indiscriminate slaughter.

Ranma watched as a little girl ran towards him, screaming in terror, a doll in her arms.

The image ended. The field returned.

"Oh dear," summed up Mihoshi.

Ranma went to one of the mounds of dirt and scraped away a thin amount of the soil to reveal half of the little girl's doll though the colors had faded with age. "Great."

"Uhm, well, that happened quite some time ago, so I'm sure the enemy isn't here any more," said Mihoshi, looking a little paler than usual.

"How much time?" asked Ranma.

"About one hundred years, I think or maybe it was a millenium. Errr," Mihoshi fidgeted. "I think that's about all I can do here, unless you want some camping equipment? I was just giving you your wish and then you gave it to that girl, and this really isn't my fault."

Pop!

"Just great," said Ranma. "Leave me off in a graveyard, why don't you?"
