Ranma was in a future. Being in a grassy field with a few trees scattered about in a pastoral sort of landscape didn't tell him anything.

So he really didn't know that he was:

in a near future post-apocalypse Earth. (50-100 years after Apocalypse)
in a not so near future Earth. (+200-900 years)
in a distant future Earth. (1000 to 10,000 years after he left.)
very distant future Earth (over 10,000 years has passed.)
some other timeframe
