If he was a superstitous man, he might have thought that the gods were out to get him. But since he wasn't, he just put it down to a series of inconviencing coincidences.
Since he had never really thought of staying in his apartment for any long period of time even without some sort of emergency, he had headed back to the Headquarters to get some work done. Along the way, he tried to work out what sort of assets he had to use, which turned out to be minimal. As far as he could determine, he had only the Evas and anything that he had kept from getting noticed by anyone else. There was a chance that he could still salvage something, though with the way things were going he wasn't having much luck.
That meant that time was of the essence, and that dawdling was no longer an option. He had to act before it got out of hand any more. It was time for him to work on a firm stance and make events get back onto the track that he had set for them. No one and nothing were about to make everything that he had worked for be for not.
And so, as he arrived at NERV Headquarters, he set about:
