"A primitive, H'll. I can scarcely believe it but look at these readings."
H'll extended two eyestalks towards the monitor in question. "Temporal crossrip? These primitives lacked that technology. They barely had computers that could crossconnect."
"Obviously, not all were as bearskins-and-flint-knives as we thought." B'nee clacked his fore-mandibles. "I'm keeping this primitive alive, he was not suited for the environment."
"Wait till Professor M'nti sees these recordings," gloated H'll. "Glostopf Award here we come!"
"I'm not sure we should submit these to the academica," said B'nee.
"What?! Do mine tender auditory tendrils deceive me?" H'll gave B'nee a gesture indicating impolite disagreement two degrees. "Why the sporf not?"
"The primitive's temporal pathway is degrading, given another few planetary rotations it will close entirely," pointed out B'nee. "And then what of the primitive? It will die without massive reconstruction and even if we could get it past that point it is the last of its species."
"You're not suggesting... Are you?" H'll turned speculative. "If we do this we'll get in trouble. At least in the short term. I have a feeling some of the higher ranked academica would turn a blind eyestalk or two. Especially if we rigged a hyperspatial posttemporal monitor..."
B'nee gave the equivelant of a nods and thumb's up. "If we do this - the subject has suffered considerable damage to his primitive brain. We can reconstruct but much data lost. We would have to upgrade of course."
"That's a given," admitted H'll. "It's a far riskier course, but the rewards are potentially greater."
"We don't know what happened to the inhabitants of Tequol 3," pointed out B'nee. "We find their cities frozen with the exception of the crystalline one. It appears everyone died overnight except for that one city, but that one merely lasted a few thousand planetary orbits before perishing as well. The primitive came before their great disaster. Their atmosphere is mostly unbreathable, their biosphere almost nonexistent. If we hadn't found those bacteria we'd have concluded this planet entirely lifeless!"
"We'll have to work quickly," said H'll with a particularly eager glint to his shading chiton betraying his intrigue. "If you work the repairs on the primitive, I'll prepare the tagalong probe."
"I've already begun," indicated B'nee. "Empowering the primitive to the point where it can potentially avert the fall of its civilization is the tricky part. Shall we:"
