"What is it?" Theo asked, turning worried at his wife's expression. He stood up, against the better judgment that warned him sitting down might be better. "Were the girls hurt?"
Julia sighed and looked to her side at something in the hallway outside of the room. She faced him again.
"Gina got a hold of some magic again," she said. Theo frowned, that did not sound very promising. "There was an accident. Gina?"
Theo followed the direction of Julia's gaze and saw someone huddled up in a blanket apparently trying to hide their face. What concerned him the most was a residue of magic about the person.
"Gina?" Theo asked.
And the young woman cautiously peeked out from her blanket to reveal her bat-like face.
"Oh dear," Theo said.
"Dad...I..." Gina started to say.
"I'll give the lecture later," Theo said severely. "Let's see what we're dealing with."
"I leave you two here then," Julia said. "I have to go have a CHAT with our other daughters." Both Theo and Gina felt the air temperature cool by several degrees at that sentence.
"That's worse than the flaming head," Gina whispered after her mom was well out of range.
"You have no idea," Theo agreed. Then he sighed and looked her over for a moment. "What did this?"
"Err...there's this place called Jusenkyo," Gina started.
"What were you doing there?" Theo asked.
"Well, I didn't go there," Gina said. "I had just ordered some water from it. I was going to be getting something from Pee Wee that had to do with Jusenkyo and needed it to test if what he wanted to trade to me was a fraud or not."
"You took some water with you to the trade didn't you?" Theo said.
"Yeah," Gina said sheepishly. "There was a fight, the water samples all spilled, and me and Pee Wee's ninja got doused...is there...anything you can do?"
"I don't know," Theo said. "The waters of Jusendo aren't quite like magic. They're the result of magic, certainly, records indicate Iceron had a fortress in the area once, but they're not actually magic. It's part of why the curse is so resilient to removal. Nobody knows how it works."
"Well," Gina said. "Maybe it's scientific after all...maybe."
"Maybe," Theo said. "But in your case there is definitely magic involved."
"But you said," Gina protested.
"Everything I read about you screams lycanthrope, Gina," Theo said. "And not an affliction either. An afflicted form could be cured, but it seems your change is deeper, more like what the original changes might have been like."
"Then anything I try to do with gene therapy will just be 'corrected,'" Gina reasoned pathetically.
"You're going to have to learn to live with this, I think," her father said reluctantly.
"I'll have to get Brit to teach me how to change," Gina mumbled. Then she thought of what her mother was heading off to do. "Scratch that, Brit's going to be busy a long time...plus she's pregnant so...I'll have to get Jetta to teach me."
"She's in the guest room," Theo said. "It'll just take a moment to get her."
"Please?" Gina asked. "I want my hands back."
