Lone Shark: Promenade [Episode 76978]

by Thrythlind

The idiocy of her own species (well, half her species) sometimes amazed her. Things had started out well enough, but, within a couple of hours of daybreak the locals started killing the "rumor." That part she had had a personal experience with when she commented on how surprised she was that the beaches were still open.

"Honey, don't be silly," the counter lady at the market told her. "There're no dangerous sharks in these waters."

This had been followed by the patronizing click some of these islanders took when dealing with tourists.

"All those stories about sharks eating people," she said shaking her head. "They're..." And her eye caught sight of the mark around Nabiki's arm.

"Got caught in an undertow six years ago," Nabiki said smirking. "Shark pulled me out and dropped me in the shallows. I guess it didn't like how I tasted. Lucky it grabbed me, I'd have drowned otherwise."

The woman was silent as Nabiki paid for her things and left.

She sat on the beach and frowned, deciding that it was a good idea that she had rented that cabin for most of the summer. She'd be on hand to do what she could.

She glanced around and was gratified to notice that that cop, Brody she thought, was as anxious as she was. Probably town pressure brought to bear to keep things open. She couldn't really fault them, she'd probably have been just as bad if certain things hadn't happened.

She glanced around, noting the rising numbers of the people onto the beach. If she wanted to make her move, she needed to do it soon, before it was impossible to go unnoticed. As inconspicously as possible she strode down to the water and slipped in, swimming out into the water.

She slipped under the water and in a few moments she was pulling water into her mouth and out her gill slits as she patrolled along the bottom of the bay seeking past the cacophony of sensations for any sign of the coming menace.

The plan was simple, but not without risk. She'd simply wait for another shark to show up, then make herself VERY visible before the other shark got too close.

The risk was that she'd have to stay out there, with the other shark, until the bay was cleared. That put her in danger of being getting shot, not particularly dangerous given her thick skin but it hurt, or getting eaten. Plus she'd have to find another beach to climb onto herself and mix in with everybody else.

"No plan is perfect," she thought to herself.
