Megumi bit into a piece of toast. "Like I said I thought you were already gone. You weren't in your bedroom. And remember, you lent me your bike for today while mine's in the shop."
"Huh? But I'm late!" cried Keiichi, incredulously.
"And without a bike, I'll be late too. Besides, you promised the bike to me. You overslept, you run." Megumi grinned, and unhurriedly picked up a bit of rice, smiling with amusement. "If you go now, you can probably make it if you hurry."
Keiichi looked hungrily at breakfast, then at the door.
"I'll get you for this, sis," he threatened, grabbing his pack and running for campus.
"You'll never catch me," came the reply as he jogged down the steps. "I've got a motorbike..."
He focused, noting the movement of the people on the street, pushing by, finding holes. Movement to the side distracted him, along with the sound of a cat's extreme displeasure.
Three or four boys were in the vacant lot harassing some poor thing, the rattle of tin cans echoing as they worked. "C'mon, hold it still so I can tie the string to it's tail!" said one of them.
Late or not, Keiichi had to do something. "Hey! Get outta here!" he called, charging into the lot. "Leave it alone!"
The kids scattered, cursing and calling him names for a moment once they felt they were safely out of range. Keiichi didn't bother to chase them, seeing to the cat, which had a bandage on it's forehead.
"Poor thing, did they hurt you?" Keiichi asked it, pulling the bandage carefully off the black fur to reveal...
