A rustling of bushes got the man's attention as two large creatures that were covered in brown fur that looked out of a bad B horror picture and dressed in threadbare clothes like his own came into view. However instead of running to the nearest town to grab ye old lynch mob and get some silver bullets, the man just frowned at them.
"So, any luck?" he asked the two werewolves.
The taller one just sighed and shook his head. "Sorry sir, but no. We followed her trail that started on the other side of the valley to the edge of the sea again, but it vanished once we got there. She either took a ship from there or went swimming again."
"I think we should just go home," the other one said; much to the annoyance of the man sitting down on the ground. "Well come on! I know she's your fiancée and all but we've been following her for YEARS Sander! Plus the one time she actually stays in one place for over a week you say we can go in because of some spell on that book that tells you this place is dangerous. If you can finally understand that stupid thing then just use it to get Ranma back."
Sander just sighed and rubbed his had in frustration before closing the only good thing about his father's legacy. "You know damn well just how important this is," Sander told them. "Apart from my sister that girl is the only female werewolf left! Without her our clan is done for, my sister may be able to have children but one person can't continue an entire race."
Seeing that the two other wolves had been pacified for now Sander rubbed his head in frustration. "Look, if you want some time off then go back to the den and give them a report so it can get to Jetta," Sander told them. The two wolves didn’t look very please with that option, once Jetta heard they lost Ranma again they’d be wishing they were Brendan. "I'll go on where you found her trail see where it leads."
"Japan most likely," the first werewolf said. "If she would have gone just gone for a swim we would have seen her, and it does fit with all the things she's been doing in the past."
Sander simply nodded in agreement before shifting to his hybrid form and grabbing his pack. Not for the first time in his life Sander wished he had his father's keen sense of smell, or at least knew how to work the spells in that damn book. With them catching up to Ranma would have been easy.
At least she was heading to a somewhat smaller country this time. It had originally taken the three wolves months to pick up Ranma's original trail after she swam to the European mainland, and by then she had crossed into Asia. Even after they had the girl's trail it felt like they were trying to chase a werecheetah half the time.
Marking his place one what Sander had deduced as a teleportation spell of some sort, he put the book back in its place and started to walk around the mountain range. At least he didn't smell any humans in the area, damn Amazons had been nothing but trouble and he sure as hell wouldn't miss them.
"The things I do for childhood friends," Sander mumbled to himself as he walked along.
