Which was the first mention of 'Ranma Saotome and his Sailor Pets' as the fact that some of these girls had things like functional tails to clue in people that these weren't girls from next door.
Genma tried to hush things up, not wanting any attention himself - particularly from the authorities at that point. He ducked and covered and ran with Ranma.
Naturally the girls caught up.
Again and again.
"Against injustice we fight!
Our powers strong, our cause is right!
Sailor Pets - HO!"
A bank robbery in Osaka. A mugging in Kobe. A street vendor getting pushed around by street punks in Wakayama. Things that normal Japanese would assume 'Yakuza' and look the other way, and then 'have never seen'. Except that now these 'Sailor Pets' were posing for photo-op after doing some superhero schtick.
Genma was about to scream at the unfairness of it all by the time the month ended.
"AAAAAAA! I'm fading away!"
Genma poked his head up, wiping the excess sake from his mouth.
"RANMAAA!" the Sailor Pets cried and leapt almost as one towards their Ranma, fading completely out before they reached him.
"The spell wore off," realized Genma. "They're gone! GONE! Bwahahahahahaha!"
Ranma sniffled. "Why did they have to go?"
"Because you were turning into a weak little girl," replied Ranma's father, keeping his thoughts about the spell duration to himself. "They couldn't stick around because you were weak and girlish. Now they're gone forever. Remember Ranma - only the Art is your friend. You can always rely on the Art. Everything else leaves you. Well, except your old father. Now come on, son, we have a lot of training to catch up on."
"WAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Usagi cried out.
"We'll have to find a way to return, somehow, someway," promised the Nerdette Ami. "We have the cuddle-bond, we have his psychic 'feel', there is still a chance."
The years went by and Ranma learned at his father's hands. Never rely on anyone or anything except the Art. Nothing mattered except the Art.
