One graybeard in particular remembered hearing a tale told by his great-grandam involving a prince of a foreign land being spirited away to avoid a coup. Others suspected all sorts of things but it was simple enough to determine that the fae had been responsible (ruling out some of the more sinister possibilities) and that the environmental change would do the tyke some good.
Little Ranma (a strange name but it was the one that came up in divinations) was a strong lad and quickly grew into a hard worker. He was tested for several potential crafts and it was decided that he would be a warrior and in particular a smith.
The fae had left little "gifts" in the young one, as was their custom for adopting a human godchild, and so Ranma grew into that craft with an eye for beauty and crafting weapons and armor that nobles if not kings might envy the final product.
More, he was a steelsinger. He sang or chanted as he went, the words and melody came from within, and the weapon would be of exceptional worth when done due to minor enchantments woven directly into the steel.
There came a time though when he started spending most of his time in one of the ventilation shafts that pulled air into the city. When his work began to falter and his brilliance at turning out new craft faded. Those watching his progress knew what it was and that it was time for Ranma to leave them.
So his foster parents packed his bags and his best weapons and armor, bade him a gruff farewell and promised to box his overtall ears if he didn't write home once in awhile, and sent him off to the world at large to have his own adventures and find a nice girl of his own height.
