Sky Tiger: Ranma Makes the Call [Episode 81662]

by Red Priest of the 17th Order

The door to Ranma’s small one-room apartment opened slowly, the hallway light illuminating the dark room. He flipped on the light switch as he stepped in and closed the door behind him, locking it as he did. With the lights on, one could see that Ranma’s apartment was, for the most part bare. It just held a couch, which could be converted into a bed, a small dresser, and there was a hotplate and microwave near a small refrigerator and cooler.

Ranma made his way over to the dresser. There were a few flyers for various Dojos and Flight schools on top of the dresser. Moving them about, Ranma found his phone quickly. He picked up the receiver and started dialing a few numbers. “I hope whoever picks up is someone I can talk to on a civil-level...” Ranma mumbled as he heard a ringing.

The Matriarch of the Tendo home, Kasumi Tofu-Tendo had a virtual smile on her face and in her heart as she hummed a little ditty while washing dishes. She was still the lovable woman anyone knew her as, although she now had quite the belly. She had gotten married to Dr. Ono Tofu a year ago and she was only two months until due.

Kasumi sighed wistfully to herself. Breakfast went very well, and her husband said he would be home early tonight. At the house, Akane was already getting everything together for the afternoon classes at the Dojo, and her father and uncle Saotome were one the veranda playing Shogi. “So many still home, yet so many missing,” Kasumi thought a seriously.

After all, Kasumi, while she had her family, she knew it wasn’t complete. Nabiki had moved out some time ago to be closer to her college and was almost done with her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. Grandfather Happosai hadn’t been long for this world once Cologne had left, and he died a few months after. And then there was the missing ‘fiancé’ of Akane, Ranma Saotome. He was a constant source of excitement in Kasumi’s mostly dull life. He truly did liven things up once he came to the Dojo.

“Of course, I still keep in touch with Ranma-kun whenever I can,” Kasumi thought as she placed another dish down on the stack of dried clean dishes. Of course, she hadn’t heard from Ranma in quite some time, well over a year. “If I could have gotten a hold of him, I would have invited him to my wedding,” Kasumi thought. Still, what Ranma did was his choice. It was his life. Kasumi just wished she could have been a larger part of it is all.

It was then that Kasumi heard the phone ring. Letting the dish down in the sink, Kasumi took a nearby towel and dried her hands as she walked towards the phone. Picking up the receiver, Kasumi asked, “Hello?”

“Hey, Kasumi,” came a somewhat-roguish, yet familiar voice said. “Glad I got through to you.”

The smile on Kasumi’s face brightened. “Ranma-kun!” Kasumi said cheerfully. “How nice to hear from you again. You’ve missed out on so much.”

“Yeah,” Ranma’s voice could be heard apologizing. “Sorry about that, Kasumi,” Ranma said seriously. “I’ve been busy with life and I just never really found the time to drop a line and let you know how I’m doing.”

Nodding her head, Kasumi said, “Oh, sorry to hear that,” Kasumi said. “But you did miss out on a lot.”

“Like what?” Ranma asked.

“Like that I got married!” Kasumi said with obvious glee to her voice.

“You did!?” Ranma asked. “Oh, wow! When’d you get married? Did you marry Tofu?”

“Yes, I did marry Ono-kun, Ranma,” Kasumi answered. “We got married a year ago and...” Kasumi smiled quite a bit. “I’m six months pregnant.”

“You’re what!?” Ranma’s voice could be heard.

“Yes, you heard right,” Kasumi said. “I got married and am now pregnant with Dr. Tofu’s child.”

“Well, congrats, Kasumi!” Ranma said. “You deserved to have a happy occasion.”

Smiling, Kasumi said, “I wish you could have been there. I wanted to invite you, but I have no clue where you’re staying.”

“And I prefer it that way,” Ranma said. “I prefer to have some privacy and a LIFE away from pops and your father.”

Sighing, Kasumi said, “I understand.

“Anyway, Kasumi,” Ranma started, “I wanted to know if the old men are gonna be there later tonight.”

“They are,” Kasumi said. “Why do you ask?”

Though Kasumi could not see it, Ranma was smiling. “Better make another place at the table, Kasumi. Guess who’s coming to dinner.”

Kasumi nearly squealed in delight. “You’re coming over?”

“Yeah,” Ranma said. “There’s something important I need to do, and I need to do it face-to-face with your father and my old man.”

“All right then,” Kasumi said. “Be sure to be here by seven, sharp! I’ll have such a nice dinner ready”

“Thanks, Kasumi,” Ranma said. “You always were such a nice lady.”

“Anytime, Ranma-kun,” Kasumi said. “Now, I’ll get to cooking. You make sure you look nice. I’m sure everyone will be glad to see you.”

“All right, Kasumi,” Ranma said. “See you at seven.” And then Ranma hung up.

Placing the phone down on the hook, Ranma sighed. He didn’t want this to become a big production, but it looked like it obviously was. “Just my luck,” Ranma mumbled. “I just wanted to get the facts straight, and now I gotta stay around them for a long while.”

Sighing, Ranma knew there was no use in fighting it. Kasumi wanted him to stay for dinner, and that would be that. “Well, looks like I’ll have to wear something formal...”

Ranma groaned. He didn’t have anything really ‘nice’ to wear. “Looks like I’ll have to go shopping.”
